Big Idea: If we are going to impact the world around us for Christ, it needs to start at home.
I. Christ the Foundation (v. 17)
A. If a home is to weather the storms, then it must be built on a
solid foundation. This truth applies to our spiritual lives as well.
For the Christian, Messiah Jesus is the foundation on which we
build our home and stand firm (cf. 1 Cor. 3:10-11).
B. The foundational principles of Christ on which we build:
1. The presence of Christ (cf. Matt. 7:24-27) – His Word directs our steps and shows us the way.
2. The power of Christ (cf. Eph. 3:20-21; Phil. 4:13) – The Holy Spirit is our source of strength and power.
3. The purpose of Christ (v. 17) – To bring glory to His name through our attitudes and actions.
II. Harmony in the Home, Continued (vv. 20-4:1cf. Eph. 6:1-9).
A. How can we clothe ourselves in Christ as children? As parents?
1. Children (v. 20) – As parents have a responsibility to their children, children also have a responsibility to their parents:
a. For young children living at home, they are called to submit to their parents in recognition of God’s order. An adult child may not be under the same obligation, but they must respect and honor their parents (v. 20; cf. Eph. 6:1-3; Ex. 20:12), by loving them, listening to them, appreciating them, and forgiving them.

2. Parents (v. 21) – show your children the grace and mercy of Christ and train them up in the Lord (cf. Eph. 6:4):
a. Love them.
b. Listen to them.
c. Give them clear boundaries, and enforce them.
d. Give them time to grow and mature.
B. Masters and servants – Slavery was the norm in the first century; today the contemporary correlation is between employer and employee. In both cases, we are to keep our focus on Christ and work as unto the Lord, seeking to please Him (vv. 22-24, 4:1; cf. Eph. 6:5-9; Gal. 3:26-29).
