1John 1-2:2
Introduction to 1John

Why was John prompted to write this letter?
-false teaching was spreading among the churches
2:18, 26
3:7
4:1

What was the false teaching?
likely Gnosticism
-physical world/our body is evil so:
-salvation is achieved thru secret knowledge of privileged few so:

Three false teaching outcomes:
-denial that sin exists in our human nature
-denial that sinful behavior is wrong
-denial that sin impedes relationship with God and others

Three tests for authentic Christian faith
-3:23/5:5,10,13 - Jesus Messiah is God incarnate
-1:5/3:5,9 - God’s holiness is reflected in our lifestyle
-4:7-8 - God’s love is visible in our relationships
The Purpose of the letter = to encourage believers to experience the joy of knowing Christ
1:4 “We are writing these things so that you may fully share our joy.”

What can interfere with us having the Joy of the Lord?
Our Sin Problem
Our Attraction to Worldly Darkness
Our Disunity/Disengagement with Believers
Our Propensity for False Teaching
1John = Christianity 101
What does it mean for us to be actual followers of Jesus Christ?
We know God personally 1:1-4
And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.

the one who existed from the beginning
He is the Word of life
the one who is eternal life
He was with the Father, and then he was revealed to us
We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands
We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands

Knowing God thru faith in Jesus is both our cognitive and experiential reality.

How do we know and experience God personally today?
thru His Word to us
thru His Spirit within us
thru His people around us
We know Ourselves truly 1:5-10
5 “…God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all.”
God is the starting point for human understanding, the essential for an accurate worldview.

Light refers to God’s holiness which we must grasp before we can fully understand God’s love.

We all got a problem called sin, Jesus is the only solution

if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness =

7 But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.

If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves =

9 But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.

If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar = his word has no place in our hearts.

But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous. He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and the sins of all the world.
We know the Joy in Christ confidently 1:4

And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. 4 We are writing these things so that you may fully share our joy.
