TEMPTATION & TRANSFORMATION
The Lord was with Joseph, so he succeeded in everything he did as he served in the home of his Egyptian master. Potiphar noticed this and realized that the Lord was with Joseph, giving him success in everything he did. This pleased Potiphar, so he soon made Joseph his personal attendant. He put him in charge of his entire household and everything he owned. From the day Joseph was put in charge of his master’s household and property, the Lord began to bless Potiphar’s household for Joseph’s sake. Joseph was a very handsome and well-built young man, and Potiphar’s wife soon began to look at him lustfully. “Come and sleep with me,” she demanded. But Joseph refused. “Look, my master trusts me with everything in his entire household. No one here has more authority than I do. He has held back nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How could I do such a wicked thing? It would be a great sin against God.” She kept putting pressure on Joseph day after day, but he refused to sleep with her, and he kept out of her way as much as possible. One day, however, no one else was around when he went in to do his work. She came and grabbed him by his cloak, demanding, “Come on, sleep with me!” Joseph tore himself away, but he left his cloak in her hand as he ran from the house. When she saw that she was holding his cloak and he had fled, she called out to her servants. Soon all the men came running. “Look! My husband has brought this Hebrew slave here to make fools of us! He came into my room to rape me, but I screamed. When he heard me scream, he ran outside and got away, but he left his cloak behind with me.” She kept the cloak with her until her husband came home. Then she told him her story. Potiphar was furious when he heard his wife’s story about how Joseph had treated her. So he took Joseph and threw him into the prison. And there he remained. But the Lord was with Joseph in the prison and showed him God’s faithful love. Genesis 2:21
At the moment temptation is diffused, transformation is infused.
ON TEMPTATION
1/ From Joseph, we learn that temptation can come from natural desires.
Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. James 1:14
2/ From Joseph, we learn that temptation can lead to sin and devastation.
Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death. James 1:14-16
3/ From Joseph, we learn that temptation is relentless.
She kept putting pressure on Joseph day after day. Genesis 39:10
You will be tempted when the Lord is with you and sometimes because He is with you!
4/ From Joseph, we learn strategies to defeat temptation.
Submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you! James 4:7
Sin often fascinates before it assassinates.
Avoiding
This is about avoiding certain places and certain people.
Running
The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, He will show you a way out so that you can endure. 1 Corinthians 10:13
Quoting
“If you are the Son of God…” Matthew 4:3, 6
Satan tempted Jesus’ identity more than anything. The same is true for you. He wants you to sin so you will question if you are really a son or daughter of God!
We do not fight the devil with our words, but with God’s words!
I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:11
Communing
It was when Joseph was isolated and alone that temptation came.
Praying and Fasting
“This kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” Matthew 17:21
Visioneering
“Vision is the greatest deterrent of sin.”
5/ From Joseph, we learn Satan and sinners do not like resistance.
Former lovers said: “Augustine, it is I!” And he replied: “Yes. But it is no longer I.”
6/ From Joseph, we learn that the Lord will vindicate us.
7/ From Joseph, we learn the Lord will be with us, whether we pass or fail.
Joseph passed the temptation with a stranger but failed it with his brothers. And even in his failure, the Lord was with him!
ON RECOVERY
Recover by confessing quick!
Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. James 5:16
Recover by recalling what God says about you!
Recover by getting back up!
Though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again. Proverbs 24:16
Recover by remembering Satan may have won the battle, but Jesus has won the war!
