“I’m not suggesting that you exalt yourself somehow as God’s gift to your people. Perish the thought that any pastor would seek to promote his own reputation by gathering admirers for himself. This work of pastoring is not about you, remember? It’s all about Jesus and his gifts. You only work for him. That’s where the giftedness comes in. You are not the groom, but the best man, Gregory reminded pastors very long ago. ‘That man is an enemy to his Redeemer who on the strength of the good works he performs, desires to be loved by the Church, rather than by Him. Indeed, a servant is guilty of adulterous thought, if he craves to please the eyes of the bride when the bridegroom sends gifts to her by him.’ You are not to court the bride of Christ. That would be adulterous; she already has a husband.”

Key Theme:
Division takes place within the church when our heart & affections are no longer focused on Christ but instead focused on the servants of Christ.
Key Application:
Guard our hearts & minds from being infatuated with human leaders rather than being in awe of who God is.
Key Verses:
1 Corinthians 3:5 – “What then is Apollos? What is Paul? They are servants through whom you believed, and each has the role the Lord has given.”
Key Questions:
1. Why do you think we can be prone to focus more of our attention on human leaders & pastors rather than on Jesus?
2. On this topic, in what ways have you seen division take place amongst Christians?
3. How can you guard yourself in a way where you don’t become like the Corinthians and contribute to division within the church?

Church family, we praise God for how faithfully in so many respects you give. Our church family is undeniably generous, but we still have great needs for supplication. We ask that you give joyfully, faithfully and sacrificially in response to how our great God and Savior has given to us.
