Weekly Sermon Overview:
After Easter morning, we often find ourselves like the disciples in John 21, tempted to return to the familiar "old ways" of our lives because we aren't quite sure how to live a post-Resurrection life. We go back to our “fishing nets”, laboring through the night only to find them empty and our spirits exhausted. However, the Risen Christ meets us on the shoreline of our ordinary lives, not with a reprimand, but with an invitation to a meal. This "Breakfast on the Beach" serves as a profound moment of restoration for Peter and for us, moving us from the isolation of our own interests toward a communal responsibility.
This transition from "fishing" to "feeding" is the practical application of Jesus’ New Commandment in John 13:34-35: "I give you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, so you must love each other. This is how everyone will know that you are my disciples, when you love each other."
Coupling that commandment with Jesus’ three-fold question to Peter ("Do you love me?") we, like the disciples, are called to look beyond our own needs to the "lambs" in our community who are hungry for dignity, equity, and bread. When we engage in the work of justice, we are no longer just staring at an empty tomb; we are actively tending the sheep and proving that the Resurrection has truly changed the world.
