WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE SAVED?

A.K.A.

What does it mean to be a follower of Jesus?

1. Some of you need to be saved.
2. Some of you think you are saved, but aren't, and need to be.
3. Some of you aren’t saved because you’ve been hurt or confused by those who think they are saved.
4. Some of you need to be taught/reminded what it means to be saved.

MAIN POINT:

Being saved isn’t about adhering to a RELIGIOUS SET of RULES but about adopting these RADICAL SHIFTS because of a RELATIONSHIP.

#1 – ADOPTING A NEW LIFE

The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” (Genesis 12:1–3)

NEW LIFE = NEW IDENTITY

1. New Authority
2. New Land
3. New Family
4. New Nation
5. New Culture
a. New Worldview
b. New Ethics

The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” (Gen. 12:1–3)

#1 - ADOPTING A NEW LIFE (NT)

He saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow Me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” And at once they left their nets and followed Him. (Matthew 4:18–20)

“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28–29)

But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God—children born not of blood, nor of the desire or will of man, but born of God. (John 1:12–13)

Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation, but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it . . . For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery that returns you to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption to sonship, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” (Romans 8:12–15)

#2 – ADOPTING A NEW OBJECTIVE

The Lord had said to Abram, “...and you will be a blessing . . . [A]nd all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” (Genesis 12:3)

Then the LORD said, “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great. Because their sin is so grievous, I will go down to see if their actions fully justify the outcry that has reached Me.” . . . Abraham stepped forward and said, “Will You really sweep away the righteous with the wicked? What if there are fifty righteous ones in the city? Will You really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous ones who are there?

Far be it from You to do such a thing—to kill the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike. Far be it from You! Will not the Judge of all the earth do what is right?” So the LORD replied, “If I find fifty (45, 40, 30, 20, 10) righteous ones within the city of Sodom, on their account I will spare the whole place.”
(Genesis 18:20–32)

NEW OBJECTIVE = NEW MISSION

1. Selfless (Not about You)
2. Humble (Thinking of Others)
3. Pray (Intercede/Mediate for Others)
4. Love Sinners (Enemies)
5. Seek Welfare (Well-being)

#2 - ADOPTING A NEW OBJECTIVE (NT)

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. (Matthew 28:19–20)

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation . . . And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ.... (Romans 8:12–15)

#3 – ADOPTING A NEW LOVE

“Take your son,” God said, “your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.”. . . “The boy and I will go over there to worship, and then we will return to you.” Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac. He himself carried the fire and the sacrificial knife and the two of them walked....

....on together. Then Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” “Here I am, my son,” he replied. “The fire and the wood are here,” said Isaac, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Abraham answered, “God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” When they arrived at the place God had designated, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood. He bound his son Isaac and placed him on the altar, atop the wood. Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. (Genesis 22:1–10)

NEW LOVE = NEW LOYALTY

1. Give Him your Shame (Baggage)
2. Give Him your Pride and Joy (Blessings)
3. Love Him Supremely
4. Trust and Obey Him Intensely
5. See Him as Jehovah Jireh

#3 – ADOPTING A NEW LOVE (NT)

Jesus turned and said to them, “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be My disciple. And whoever does not carry his cross and follow Me cannot be My disciple. (Matthew 14:25–27)

He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. And He is the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning and firstborn from among the dead, so that in all things He may have preeminence. (Colossians 1:17–18)

WHY ARE THESE THE THREE THINGS? —

THESE ARE THE THREE THINGS JESUS DID TO SAVE SINNERS

LIFE (IDENTITY)

Jesus Identified with Sinners
- The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. (John 1:14)
- Jesus came to be baptized by John. (Matthew 3:13)
- Arrested, Condemned, and Crucified between two criminals. (Mark 15:27)

OBJECTIVE (MISSION)

Jesus was on Mission to Save Sinners
- Give him the name Jesus as He will save His people from their sins. (Matthew 1:21)
- The Son of Man came to give his life as a ransom for many. (Mark 10:45)
- The Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost. (Luke 19:10)

LOVE (LOYALTY)

Jesus Loved the Father Unconditionally
- For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son. (John 3:16)
- I seek to please the one who sent Me. (John 5:30)
- If possible take this cup from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will. (Matthew 26:39)
- Carrying his own cross (wood), He went to Golgotha where they crucified Him (John 19:17–18)
● Mount Moriah—Solomon’s Temple—Jesus

● Where there was none righteous to mercifully save Sodom/Gomorrah, Jesus is. (Romans 5:18–19)
● Where Isaac was spared, Jesus was slain.
● Where God provided a ram to spare Isaac, God provided Jesus to spare us. (John 1:29)
● Where Abraham believed God could raise Isaac from the dead, God did raise Jesus from the dead. (Hebrews 11:19; Luke 24:6; 1 Corinthians 15:3–8)

How are you saved?

HOW TO BE SAVED:

Have Faith — Jesus is THE KING!

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord (King),” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, YOU WILL BE SAVED. (Romans 10:9)

You’ll Adopt his Objective

You’ll Adopt His Love
