Invited and Dressed for the Occasion
Series: Kingdom Stories For Everyday Life
Scripture: Matthew22:2-14

The first invitees were declared _____________ because they __________________ the invitation.
• “worthiness” involves being able to _________________ the king’s wedding banquet for what it is, and ___________________ to it as a top ________________.

The new invitation is not __________ to the _______________.
theaomai = “sees” or even better translated as “_______________.”

The wedding clothes become a symbol for ________________ yourself _________________ for the wedding feast.
• The problem is that this man without the wedding clothes _________________ to _________________.
• Ephesians 4:22-24
• Colossians 3:9-14
• The _______________ gift of God’s salvation comes with ____________________.
• The point is that we’re being ____________________ into the _________________ of Christ.
• 2 Peter 3:9

2 Questions we all must answer:
• Will you accept the invitation that Christ has offered you?
• Will you clothe your life according to the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness?
TALK IT OVER

Start talking.
• What’s the most formal event you’ve ever been invited to? What did you have to do to prepare?
• Have you ever shown up somewhere underdressed or overdressed? What happened?
• When you receive an invitation to something important, what usually determines whether you go or not?
• What’s one event you’d drop everything to attend?

Start thinking:
• Why do you think the first group of invited guests ignored the king’s invitation? What does it say about their priorities that they chose work, business, and daily life over the banquet?
• The invitation was then extended to both the “good and bad.” What does this teach us about who is invited into God’s kingdom?
• Why do you think the king still expected wedding clothes if everyone was invited off the street?
• What’s the difference between accepting the invitation and actually being ready for the banquet?
• Why do you think Jesus ends this parable with such a strong warning?

Start Sharing:
• What are some things today that distract people from responding to God’s invitation? Have you ever found yourself too busy or preoccupied to prioritize your relationship with God?
• What does it look like to “put on the new self” in everyday life?
• Which of these “new clothes” do you most need right now: compassion, kindness, humility, patience, forgiveness, or love?
• Is there an area of your life where God is asking you to change or grow right now?

Start Praying:
• Thank God for inviting everyone into His kingdom.
• Ask God to help you recognize the value of His invitation
• Pray for hearts willing to repent and be transformed
• Ask God to help you “put on” compassion, kindness, humility, and love
• Pray for people in your life who may be ignoring God’s invitation.

Start Doing. Commit to a step and live it out this week
• Identify one “old clothing” habit or attitude you need to take off this week.
• Choose one “new clothing” trait (compassion, patience, humility, etc.) to intentionally put on.
• Set aside time this week to prioritize your relationship with God over busyness.
• Invite someone to church or into a spiritual conversation — extend the invitation.
