Misunderstanding the Grace of Jesus
Paul has just stated that grace is greater than sin – “where sin increased, grace abounded all the more” 5:20
Question: If sin brings grace, then should we actively continue to sin so that grace will continue to grow?
Answer: ABSOLUTELY NOT!! FULL STOP!!
We, who are justified by grace through faith now live in a new realm of life
The Two Realms: Adam = Death; Jesus = Life
Paul uses many contrasting words to explain the 2 realms
These 2 realms are not compatible with each other
As believers in Jesus, we now live in a new realm – a new life in Christ
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
2 Corinthians 5:17
For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son
Colossians 1:13
This is why we should never continue in sin – it is totally unthinkable, inconsistent & inappropriate for our realm
Though sin is unthinkable and inappropriate for a believer, it is not impossible
Freedom to Live
Our justification by grace through faith in Jesus has brought us into new realities that we must believe, understand and stand on
We have been spiritually baptized into Christ and have died with Him and been raised in a new life
Paul introduces a 3 thought parallel progression in verses 5-10
“If we” are united with Him/died with Him
“Knowing” our old self was crucified so sin and death are no longer our master
“For” we are now freed from sin and alive to God
"So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.”
John 8:36
Because we are united with Christ through faith, we can live in righteousness, following Jesus
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous
1 John 2:1
