Growing in Groups: Discipleship One-to-One - Cedric Holl

Growing in Groups: Discipleship One-to-One - Cedric Holl

The vision of Redeemer is to make disciples one life at a time, which really means to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Although Jesus sometimes taught in a lecture format, most of his discipleship happened informally in the normal routine of life. It was through group discussions (often around meals), praying together, serving together, and personal interactions that disciples grew into maturity. We are seeking to follow this pattern of disciple-making in the life of Redeemer Church. While Jesus often ministered in groups, he also invested deeply in one-on-one relationships, showing the value of individual guidance, mentorship, and accountability. Spiritual growth is strengthened through intentional relationships and prayer. Ultimately, we are encouraged to pursue deeper, more personal connections in our faith, recognising that Christianity is not meant to be walked alone.

Locations & Times

Redeemer Church Mauritius

Mauritius

Sunday 9:30 AM

1. One-to-One Discipleship

John 21:15-19 | John 4:1-26 | Luke 5:27-32

- Jesus regularly discipled individuals personally (Peter, the Samaritan woman, Matthew).
- Some conversations, healing, and restoration happen best in private.
- Personal encounters allow for deeper transformation and calling.
2. Mentorship and Accountability

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (NIV)
Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labour: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.

- Example of Apollos: learned and passionate, yet teachable and willing to grow.
- “Iron sharpens iron” – we grow through others.
- Accountability provides support, protection, and guidance.
- Discipleship is meant to multiply.

2 Timothy 2:2 (NIV)
And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.
3. Power in Praying Together

Matthew 26:41 (NIV)
Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.

- Jesus modelled prayer with a close circle (Jairus’ daughter, Gethsemane).
- Prayer strengthens faith in difficult moments.
- Praying together builds unity and spiritual resilience.
