Genesis 22:1–14

The Pattern of Sacrifice

Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. Genesis 22:6

Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha) John 19:17

The Promise of Provision

Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, ‘Father?’ ‘Yes, my son?’ Abraham replied.‘The fire and wood are here,’ Isaac said, ‘but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?’” Genesis 22:7

Isaac asks the question that begins to echo through the entire Bible:Where is the lamb?Abraham answered, ‘God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.’ Genesis 22:8

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, ‘Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! John 1:29

The Power of Substitution

“Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.” Genesis 22:13

But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. Isaiah 53:5
