The Glitch – Recapitulation
IDEAL: peace, freedom, love, happiness, etc.
REALITY: anxiety, broken relationships, conflict (internal and external).
The FALL – Disobedience - Sin – Death – humanity’s falls off the rails
Adam and Jesus
Romans 5: 12, 15-19
Fleming Rutledge said:
Because of that catastrophic primordial event of disobedience, the whole consequent history of humankind has been a saga of estrangement and folly. There is no area of human personality that is not infected by sin. It has penetrated the human DNA, so to speak.
RECAPITULATION (Theological term)
See this is Paul’s writing Eph. 1:7-10
The word "recapitulation"
Greek word: anakephalaiosis
means "to bring under a new head" or "to sum up."
Isaac Boaheng said:
It is on the cross that God’s image in humanity became perfect in Christ. Christ, as fully human and fully God, sums up and renews humanity on the cross by showing infinite love to the same people who were causing his suffering.
IMPLICATION:
Jesus had to become what we are (human) to fix what we are (sinners).
And through every stage, experiencing life (its trials and temptations) like we do, he did it PERFECTLY. By doing so, he "sanctified" (or cleaned up) every stage of being human. Every part of our existence was touched by his presence. He SUMS UP the whole story and gets it right for humanity. Perfect life and obedience even to death on a cross, reversed Adam’s disobedience and restored humanity’s connect back to God.
(1 Cor 15 refers to it as the First Adam and the Last Adam)
Adam: Disobeyed God in garden
Jesus: Obeyed God in garden
Adam: Fell to temptation at a tree.
Jesus: Carried humanity’s sin on a tree (cross)
Adam: His sin caused death
Jesus: Through him God’s grace and righteousness triumph over sin and death
Adam: Led humanity away from God
Jesus: Brought humanity back to God
The idea of Recapitulation and the cross offers us a different perspective…
· Our debt is dealt with
· The Pressure is Off
· We are invited
POINT:
Jesus didn't just come to save us from being human; he came to show us how to be truly human.
