We Can Trust the Bible, and Must
We need Scripture to have faith in Christ
We need Scripture to have maturity of faith in Christ
Reasons We can Believe the Bible
The Bible is Historically Reliable

Localized persecution happened
Empire sponsored persecution happened =
Nero AD 64

Governor Pliny and Emperor Trajan AD 112 =

Emperor Diocletian the Great Persecution AD 303-311 =

Christianity not a 1st century legend or myth
-NT documents consistent teaching on Jesus God, Salvation, no contradictions

-NT documents Mark, Paul, James written 10-20 yrs after Jesus

-NT is too self-defacing to be legend or myth in a shame-honor culture:

-only criminals were crucified

-women as first witnesses of Christ’s resurrection untenable

-the disciples had dufus issues

-NT is highly detailed about places, people, customs, events, nothing in 1st century like this
The Bible is Culturally Transformative

There are sections/teachings in Scripture that seem impossible to accept as 21st century American.

-the biblical context clarifies our misunderstandings/confusion

Slaves obey masters = not like American slavery, Deut 24:7; 1Timothy 1:9-11; Philemon.

Wives submit =1st century limited rights/ options for women but…

NT provides radical teaching that elevates women to mutual status with men in God’s family:
NT invites wives and husbands out of patriarchy and into mutuality for marriage:
-philosophical consistency challenges our biased assumptions
To say we can’t accept the Bible or Christianity because we find a teaching or passage offensive assumes that if there is a God, He wouldn’t do or say anything upsetting to us, and that our understanding of the passage is correct.
The Bible is Personally Accurate
