The Bible We Have is God’s Word to Us
Let’s Come to Terms
Canon = those writings Christianity has always accepted as God inspired revelation
Canonization = process of how Church recognized which writings were truly from God
OT Apocrypha/deuterocanonical = writings between 200BCE-AD100, not considered divine revelation
NT Pseudepigrapha = Greek “false writings” = from 2nd and 3rd centuries AD not accepted
Council of Nicaea = In AD 325 Emperor Constantine called for the gathering of key Christian leaders The Council debated between Church leaders and Arian teachers about Jesus being fully God and fully man.

Why the Scriptures needed to be Canonized
- the Apostles and their disciples were gone
- persecution raised question of what writings worth dying for
- people needed to know truth vs falsehood

2Peter 3:15-16
Church Fathers

Eusebius Advantage
Undisputed = already had 21 of the 27 NT books we hold as Scripture
Disputed = 5 books being debated (James, Jude, 2Peter, 2 and 3 John)
Spurious = writings not Scripture but harmless like Didache or Shepherd of Hermas
Heretical = false teaching = Gnostic writings
