Growing in Groups: Discipleship and Prayer - Phil Kendon
The vision of Redeemer is to make disciples one life at a time, which really means to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Although Jesus sometimes taught in a lecture format, most of his discipleship happened informally in the normal routine of life. It was through group discussions (often around meals), praying together, serving together, and personal interactions that disciples grew into maturity. We are seeking to follow this pattern of disciple-making in the life of Redeemer Church. We learn to pray by praying with others. That learning can take place in the intimacy of praying with one other person, in the camaraderie of praying in small groups, and in the unified voice of a whole-church prayer meeting. Praying with others may seem daunting and even intimidating, but it is the pathway to spiritual growth and a deep enrichment of our prayer lives.

2 Kings 6:15–17 (NIV)
When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. “Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?” the servant asked. “Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, LORD, so that he may see.” Then the LORD opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
Luke 11:1–4 (NIV)
One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” He said to them, “When you pray, say: “ ‘Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.’ ”
- Elisha discipled his servant through prayer.
- Jesus taught his disciples to pray.
- We can learn from the prayers of mature believers and those with spiritual responsibility for our lives.
Daniel 2:17–19 (NIV)
Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. He urged them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that he and his friends might not be executed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. During the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Then Daniel praised the God of heaven
Matthew 26:40–41 (NIV)
Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter. “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
- Daniel relied on prayer with his friends during a trial.
- Jesus wanted his disciples to stand with him in prayer.
- Our small group prayers are powerful to help us through our trials and empower us to serve God.
Acts 4:23–31 (NIV)
On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them. When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “you made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and everything in them. You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David: “ ‘Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed one.’ Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed. They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen. Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.
- The church gathered to pray with one voice.
- The whole church faced persecution.
- The whole church received power and boldness through prayer.
Philippians 1:19 (NIV)
for I know that through your prayers and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance.
2 Corinthians 1:10–11 (NIV)
He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us again. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.
Romans 15:30–32 (NIV)
I urge you, brothers and sisters, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me. Pray that I may be kept safe from the unbelievers in Judea and that the contribution I take to Jerusalem may be favorably received by the Lord’s people there, so that I may come to you with joy, by God’s will, and in your company be refreshed.
