This morning, we will be wrapping up our upward series. The final message in this series. So far, we have looked at revelation in action, eyes on the promise, understanding the civil war inside, and the anchor in the unknown. In the final message of this series, we are going to dig into a question I get asked often.

What does it look like to be a disciple of Christ?
Pastor and Author Francis Chan, in his book Not a Fan, presents a meaningful question: Are we merely admirers (“fans”) of Jesus or truly committed followers (disciples)?

He argues that many Christians appreciate Jesus, attend church, and agree with His teachings, but stop short of surrendering their lives fully to Him. He makes this direct statement; it’s important to recognize that we can attend church faithfully and still not follow Jesus fully.

You often hear me talk about the American Gospel; my desire is not to demean the church, but to observe areas that might need realignment.
An observation about many modern churches is that many times it prioritizes comfort, attendance, and inspiration, while biblical discipleship prioritizes transformation, obedience, and multiplication.

The Bible defines a disciple as more than a believer. The word “disciple” (Greek: mathētēs-math-ay-TESS) literally means learner, student, follower — someone who attaches themselves to a teacher in order to become like them.

As we begin, for a moment, I want to contrast biblical discipleship and modern church culture.

1. FOLLOWING vs. ATTENDING

Biblical Model: “Follow Me.” — Luke 9:23 “Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.”

• Daily surrender, Cross-bearing, Personal obedience

Modern Drift: Weekly attendance, Spectator mindset, Christianity as a scheduled activity.

A Disciple Follows Jesus Personally

Jesus didn’t invite people to believe ideas — He invited them to follow Him.

Being a disciple means:
• Surrendering personal control & Daily obedience. Gal. 2:20.
• Reordering priorities around Christ. Matthew 6:33.

It’s relational and active — not passive agreement.

2. TRANSFORMATION vs. INFORMATION

Biblical Model: John 8:31 “Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.”

• Scripture shapes lifestyle, Truth produces change, Character formation.

Modern Drift: Sermon consumption, Podcast Christianity, Knowledge without obedience.

Key Difference: Biblical discipleship measures growth by obedience, not Bible trivia.

A Disciple Abides in Jesus’ Word.

Remains in Scripture. Aligns life with truth. We don’t simply agree with it, we align our life to it. Letting God’s Word shape our thinking and behavior. Not just hearing the Word — living it. James 1:22.

A Disciple Bears Spiritual Fruit
“By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.” — John 15:8

Fruit includes:
• Christlike character (see Epistle to the Galatians 5:22–23) Ephesians 4 (spiritual gifts, and putting on the nature of the new man)
• Good works. James 2:14-17.
• Influence that leads others toward God. 1 Cor. 10:24.

Transformation is evidence of authentic discipleship.

3. SACRIFICE vs. COMFORT

Biblical Model: Luke 14:33 “So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.”

• Costly allegiance, Kingdom first, Eternal priorities.

Modern Drift: Faith that fits lifestyle, Avoidance of hardship, Preference-driven church selection.

Reflection Thought: If nothing in your life costs you because of Jesus, you may not be living as a disciple.

A Disciple Is Fully Committed

Jesus used strong language about the cost:

Discipleship includes: Counting the cost. Gal. 5:24.
It is wholehearted allegiance. “Counting the cost” means recognizing and agreeing to some terms first. In following Christ, we cannot simply follow our own inclinations. We cannot follow Him and the world’s way at the same time (Matthew 7:13-14). Following Him may mean we lose relationships, dreams, material things, or even our lives.

4. COMMUNITY vs. CROWD

Biblical Model: John 13:35 “By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

• Deep relational commitment, Accountability, Shared mission.

Modern Drift: Anonymous attendance, Shallow connection, social church without spiritual depth.

Biblical community requires vulnerability and responsibility.

A Disciple Loves Like Jesus.

The primary external evidence of discipleship is:
• Sacrificial love. John 15:13.
• Unity with other believers. 1 Cor. 1:10.
• Forgiveness and humility. Col. 3:12-13.

Love is not optional — it is proof.

5. MULTIPLICATION vs. CONSUMPTION

Biblical Model: Matthew 28:19–20 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.”

• Every disciple makes disciples. Gospel sharing is normal. Faith reproduces.

Modern Drift: Evangelism outsourced to leaders, Passive membership, Growth is defined by attendance numbers.

Discipleship is reproductive.

A disciple who does not disciple others is spiritually stagnant. A good question to ask ourselves: Who am I intentionally helping follow Jesus?

The goal of the church is to equip, instruct in the ways of obedience, encourage sacrifice, foster community, and help people live missional lives. Church gatherings or events are intended to help create community and catalyst moments that fuel discipleship, not replace it.

I can’t speak for every church, but I can for this one. Our aim is not to produce attendees; it is to create disciples. The church doesn’t need better spectators. It needs surrendered disciples.

When we achieve that aim, families will change. Communities will shift. Evangelism will

Jesus never invited people to be fans. He called them to follow Him completely. The sign of a surrendered follower of Jesus is those who are transformed by His Word, marked by His love, bearing fruit, and committed to helping others follow Him.

The early church in Acts of the Apostles grew not because it was convenient, but because disciples were committed.

We must not be a people who love the idea of eternal life, escaping hell, and having Jesus at our beck and call. But not be willing to leave the life we now live. Allowing desires, lifestyle, or sinful habits to remain too precious to change them.

A few simple questions to evaluate: Disciple or Church Consumer?
1. Do I rearrange my life around Jesus, or fit Him into my life?
2. Am I obeying what I learn?
3. Is there visible fruit of transformation?
4. Am I investing spiritually in someone else?
5. Would my lifestyle confuse someone about my allegiance?

The bedrock significance of this message for every believer lies within the reality presented in Revelation 3:15–16 “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.”

My prayer for each of us is that we would evaluate our walk with Christ, and should there be any part out of alignment, that we would quickly align our lives as disciples.
