Our Father

Our Father

Matthew 6:9 (NASB), “Pray, then, in this way:‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.” When Jesus says, “Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father who is in heaven,’” He anchors prayer in relationship. Prayer is not a performance—it is the privilege of children speaking to their Father. Jesus assumes we will pray. Communion with God is the ordinary rhythm of those who belong to Him. And we do not solely pray alone. He teaches us to say “Our” Father. Prayer binds us together as a family, reminding us that we come side by side as the people of God. Most importantly, we pray with confidence. Through Christ, we have been adopted; we are children of God. The Father who loves the Son welcomes us in Him. We approach not as outsiders hoping to be heard, but as sons and daughters who already are. To pray is to come together, as children, to our Heavenly Father.

1. We should Pray
Prayer is a conversation with God: Talking and listening
“Prayer is the easiest and the hardest of all things. Prayer is simple enough for a child to practice, yet weighty enough to humble the strongest man. It opens with ease to faith, yet demands perseverance when heaven seems silent. It is the sweetest communion of love, yet the fiercest battleground of the soul. Prayer is both gift and warfare. It draws us near as sons, yet tests us as soldiers. Easy because God has opened the way, hard because the flesh resists. But every victory in life is won on the knees.” – E. M. Bounds
2. We should pray together
3. We should pray confidently, but its a journey
The Gospel changes Heaven’s courtroom from a criminal trial to an adoption ceremony. - Matt Smethurst
“The one, single, nonnegotiable rule for prayer is simply this: show up! Show up regularly, irrespective of feelings and irrespective of method.”
- Ronald Rolheiser
