"The death of 1,000 people resulted from the sincere conviction that the Sabbath should not be violated. Although this event happened nearly two centuries before the healing of the blind man in John chapter 9, it does give us a feel for the intensity of the conviction of devout Jews that the Sabbath could not be broken. 2. When comparing John 5:1-18 with John 9, what conclusions can be made about sin and suffering? (Keep in mind that in John, "Sinning" is regularly connected to unbelief.)

3. Compare how the Pharisees, the blind man and his parents respond to the miracle. What do their responses reveal about Jesus' identity?

4. How are the responses from the Man Born Blind and the Man by the Pool different? How are they similar?

5. What does the blind man's miraculous journey teach us about the faith process?
