The Text In Context

"Some, perhaps, may not have yet reached the place this man had reached. They are not helpless enough, yet. They are not ready to give up on human efforts to solve their problems. They are not ready to admit they cannot make it on their own. They are still determined to get into the water, (on their own) when it is troubled. Jesus can do nothing for them.'" Message Outline:

1. Nicodemus and the Women from Samaria

2. The Man By the Pool

3. His Response

4. Gratitude

5. Our Response
Next Steps:

1. Find something to be grateful to Jesus for.

2. Express that gratitude.
Growth Group Discussion & Personal Reflection Questions:

1. The man at the pool had been ill for 38 years. How might the man's chronic/long term illness shape his outlook and/or expectations? How might chronic and/or long term illness affect a person's openness to God's healing today?

2. After being healed, the man shifts responsibility to Jesus and distances himself from him. Why do you think he responds this way? Why might we hesitate to identify with Jesus publicly? How might this story challenge how we respond when our faith becomes costly or controversial?

3. The Gospel of John gives us clear examples of characters who respond to Jesus with gratitude. We don't see any evidence of gratitude from the man by the pool. Why do you think he doesn't display gratitude to Jesus?

4. How do you cultivate gratitude?

5. What are the benefits to practicing gratitude? Is gratitude something that can be practiced?

6. Jesus' healing on the sabbath creates tension with the religious authorities who miss the miracle, entirely. Are there contemporary rules, traditions, or understandings that could cause us to miss what God is doing today? What are they?

7. What steps can we take to ensure we don't miss out on what God is doing today?
