GROUP GUIDE

This guide is designed to help you experience deeper intimacy with Jesus and build meaningful, lasting relationships with others. Get together with friends or find a group by visiting brookwoodchurch.org/groups. Let’s grow stronger together!

CONNECT
Respond to any or all of these to get the conversation rolling:
1. What have you been hearing from God this past week?
2. Have your family or friends ever been shocked when you changed your mind about something or took an unexpected new direction in life? Describe the situation.
PRAY
Spend a few minutes turning your attention toward God.

Here’s a prayer you might pray:
Dear Lord, I open my heart and ask You to speak to me in ways that I can know it’s You. Break through the noise and help me hear Your tender and personal words that are just for me. I lay down the burdens I’ve been carrying, the projects and all the responsibilities that I sometimes can’t stop thinking about (you might pause and name a few). Show me what You want me to focus on. Fill me with Your life and love and move me to a place of gratitude and worship. Change me in ways that others can see how great and powerful You are.

Add to these words your own desires and words of praise.
True worship is performed when the inner man, the spirit, is in harmony with God, and the mind is lifted up to God in sincere devotion.
St. Augustine of Hippo
STUDY AND DISCUSSION
Don’t rush through this. It’s OK if you don’t get to all the questions. Sometimes it’ll make sense to go on to the next question. Other times, you might slow down and process a bit longer. Allow God to guide the pace of your discussion.
1. Where was Jesus going and why?
2. Why does John point out that Samaria was near the plot of land Jacob had given to his son Joseph, and that the well was called Jacob’s well? How do those details help set up the story (see also v. 12)?
3. When Jesus asked the Samaritan woman for a drink, how did she respond?
4. Jesus could have taken a drink and walked away. He could have argued with her about Jewish history. Instead, what did He do?
5. What did living water mean to the woman at first? How did her understanding shift?
6. Why did Jesus tell the woman to go call her husband, then come back? How was that related to what they were talking about?
7. How do you think you would have felt if you were the woman in this situation?
8. Why do you think the woman stays in the conversation instead of walking away?
9. What does this story teach us about what it means to worship in spirit and truth?
10. What spiritual lessons was Jesus trying to teach the woman throughout their conversation? Sit with this question for a few minutes and make a list of what comes to mind.
11. What does this passage teach you about what it means to worship in community?
12. What part of this story stands out to you the most?
If Jesus were to meet you at your well today, what do you think He might want to talk about with you? Pause and ask God what He wants to say to you. Share this with your group or with a friend, and pray for each other.
SCRIPTURE MEMORY
One of the best ways to hear God in your daily life is to have His words rooted in your heart. Memorize this Scripture to direct your heart and mind in the ways of God.

“But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way.”
John 4:23 (NLT)
