Weekly Sermon Overview:
In the book of Nehemiah, we find a Jewish leader, living in Exile and heart-broken by the ruined state of Jerusalem’s walls. Serving as cupbearer to the Persian King Artaxerxes, Nehemiah didn't just mourn; he prepared. When the opportunity arose, he made a "bold ask," requesting specific resources: timber from the king’s forest and safe passage. These items were necessary to rebuild what had been broken (Nehemiah 2:1-8). This passage provides the perfect backdrop for our own ambitious goal: “Keeping Our Cool!” the AC replacement campaign. Just as Nehemiah identified a physical need to protect a spiritual
community, we are stepping out in faith to ensure our church remains a welcoming gathering place for generations to come and worship. We aren't just asking for equipment; like Nehemiah, we are asking for the "timber" needed to fulfill our mission.
However, an ambitious goal is never just about the budget; it’s about the heart. To balance this vision, we will also look at generosity through the lens of Jesus’ teachings, specifically the story of the Widow’s Mite (Mark 12:41-44). While Nehemiah shows us the courage to ask for great things, the widow shows us the spirit in which we give. Jesus reminds us that the value of a gift isn’t found in its size, but in the sacrifice and trust it represents. As we introduce this campaign to the whole congregation, we will shift our focus from "fundraising" to radical generosity and what that means for people of faith. We are trusting that the Holy Spirit, the true advocate of our mission, will move in our hearts; whether we have the resources of a king or the two small coins of a widow.
