Scripture: Proverbs 16:2-20; 30:5-8; Colossians 1:1, 9-29; Hebrews 1:1-10; John 8:12-32; 14:5-7; 17:1-17; Romans 1:16-20
In the last study, we learned that even though the world denies the existence of objective, absolute truth, God’s Word is the truth that matters. In this sermon, we’ll discover that Christ is the ultimate expression of God’s Word to us, and that the truth found in Jesus is important because Jesus Himself is truth!
Proverbs 16:2 All a man's ways seem right to him, but the LORD evaluates the motives… 18 Pride comes before destruction, and an arrogant spirit before a fall… 20 The one who understands a matter finds success, and the one who trusts in the LORD will be happy.
Proverbs 30:5 Every word of God is pure (true); He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him. 6 Don't add to His words, or He will rebuke you, and you will be proved a liar. 7b … I (the sage, the wise man, the prophet) ask of You (God) … 8 Keep falsehood and deceitful words far from me.
Colossians 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by God's will, and Timothy our brother: 2 To the saints in Christ at Colossae, who are faithful brothers… 9b We are asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of His (Messiah’s) will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding, 10 so that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him, bearing fruit in every good work and growing in the knowledge of God. 11 May you be strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for all endurance and patience, with joy 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the saints' inheritance in the light. 13 He has rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of the Son He loves. 14 We have redemption, the forgiveness of sins, in Him (Jesus and Jesus alone!). 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For everything was created by Him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities-- all things have been created through Him and for Him. 17 He is before all things, and by Him all things hold together. 18 He is also the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He might come to have first place in everything. 19 For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him, 20 and through Him to reconcile everything to Himself by making peace through the blood of His cross-- whether things on earth or things in heaven. 21 Once you were alienated and hostile in your minds because of your evil actions. 22 But now He has reconciled you by His physical body through His death, to present you holy, faultless, and blameless before Him—23a if indeed you remain grounded and steadfast in the faith and are not shifted away from the hope of the gospel that you heard… 28 We proclaim Him, warning and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ. 29 I labor for this, striving with His strength that works powerfully in me.
Hebrews 1:1 Long ago God spoke to the fathers (of the Hebrew people – the sons of Abraham) by the prophets at different times and in different ways. 2 In these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son. God has appointed Him heir of all things and made the universe through Him. 3 The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact expression of His nature, sustaining all things by His powerful word. After making purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high… 9a You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; this is why God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of joy… 10 … In the beginning, Lord, You established the earth, and the heavens are the works of Your hands;
John 8:12 Then Jesus spoke to them again: "I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows Me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life."… 15 You judge by human standards. I judge no one. 16 And if I do judge, My judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent Me judge together… 25 "Who are You?" they questioned. "Precisely what I've been telling you from the very beginning," Jesus told them. 26 "I have many things to say and to judge about you, but the One who sent Me is true, and what I have heard from Him-- these things I tell the world." 30 As He was saying these things, many believed in Him. 31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed Him, "If you continue in My word, you really are My disciples. 32 You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
John 14:5 "Lord," Thomas said, "we don't know where You're going. How can we know the way?" 6 Jesus told him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. 7 "If you know Me, you will also know My Father. From now on you do know Him and have seen Him."
John 17:1 Jesus spoke these things, looked up to heaven, and said: Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son so that the Son may glorify You, 2 for You gave Him authority over all flesh; so He may give eternal life to all You have given Him. 3 This is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and the One You have sent-- Jesus Christ… 15 I am not praying that You take them out of the world but that You protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.
Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is God's power for salvation to everyone who believes(it as truth!) , first to the Jew, and also to the Greek. 17 For in it God's righteousness is revealed from faith to faith, just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith. 18 For God's wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth, 19 since what can be known about God is evident among them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what He has made. As a result, people are without excuse.
