God's Design for Marriage: "Covenant, Not Contract"

God's Design for Marriage: "Covenant, Not Contract"

Marriage begins with God’s declaration that it is not good for us to be alone. Before sin enters the world, God creates marriage as a gift marked by unity, commitment, and permanence. In a culture that treats relationships like contracts that last only as long as they benefit us, Scripture presents marriage as a covenant rooted in promise. This week sets the foundation by reframing marriage not as a consumer arrangement, but as a covenant designed to reflect God’s faithful love. Before marriage asks anything of us, it shows us what kind of love God has already given us.

Covenant, Not Contract - Genesis 2:18–25
“God’s Design for Marriage.”
Marriage is not the goal of the Christian life. A relationship with Jesus is.
A contract is a conditional, transactional agreement between parties based on mutual benefit and trust in performance, where obligations end if either party breaches or the conditions fail.
What am I getting out of this?
“It is not good for the man to be alone.”
“This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.”
“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.”
“This is a profound mystery, but I am talking about Christ and the church.”
“I will betroth you to myself forever. I will betroth you in righteousness and justice, in love and compassion. I will betroth you in faithfulness.”
What can I give?
Covenant, not contract. That changes everything.
Next week, we will talk honestly about what love looks like when life gets hard. 1 Corinthians 13 shows us love shaped by patience and grace, and how Jesus uses marriage to teach us how to love as we have been loved.
