Calling For Prayer When Weak
James 5:13-18
Pastor Jerry Koller
In verses 14-15, we find the third “Is...Then”statement made by James. Is anyone among you sick?
• The word “sick” (which appears 33 times ion the NT) can also be translated “weak,” “am weak, “becoming weak,” “fell sick.
• The best way to figure out how this word is to be understood is by examining the context in which it is found.
• He is addressing someone who has become weary because of their affliction.
• They have become weak as a result of their suffering.
• They may have become weary or spiritually exhausted.
What do you do? Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church…
• This is the second time James has told the saints they must do something.
• The verb “call” in verse 14 means to invite or ask someone to come alongside you for a purpose.
And they are to pray over him. The elders are to pray on behalf of the individual.
Not only were the elders to lay hands on the individual, but they were also to anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.
Continuing with the idea of prayer and anointing, James points out: and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him. (James 5:15)
• The word “restore” is not necessarily a reference to physical healing. In other words, physical healing is not the primary goal of the prayer.
The goal is to restore the overwhelmed individual to a place where he or she can once again continue on in prayer during their trial or adversity.
You could say, the prayer offered in faith will save the one who is in a spiritually weak position. This is James’ understanding, for he said: and the Lord will raise him up.
• Raise means to waken, to rouse from sleep and inactivity.
• It depicts a God-given restoration from a state of incapacity to a purposeful life.
And if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him.

Winter Weather is Here

If church or other activities will be cancelled due to the weather, we will send an email, text, and post on Facebook. Please be sure to check your device before heading out. Please use caution and extreme care when coming to church as the parking lot is very icy because of the cold temperatures, The front by the main entrance is ice free and recommended for drop-offs whenever possible.

Hearing Assistance Devices Available

We have hearing assistance devices available during the morning worship service which allow the user to control the volume based on their individual needs. They are available from the Sound Booth at the rear of the sanctuary and are cleaned and sanitized after each use. For questions, see Rocky Starland.

Have You Considered?

Did you know that if your bank offers online services, you can set your tithe up as a regular ‘bill payment’ through your bank? This is a convenient option to help with continuity in giving and the ability for you to tithe even when you are on vacation or miss church. It eliminates having to wonder if you turned in your offering while you were gone! If you have questions or would like more information about how to utilize this convenient option, check with your banking institution or contact the church office.
