SERIES OVERVIEW: APOCALYPSE
The word apocalypse does not mean the end of the world; it means an unveiling or a revealing. This is the unveiling of Jesus as King. Ultimately, it is an unveiling of hope.
THE REVEALED CHRIST
Last week, we saw John writing to seven churches in Asia Minor. He encounters an overwhelming image of Jesus and falls down as if dead. Jesus responds: REVELATION 1:17-18 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.
THE PATTERN OF THE LETTERS
Jesus instructs John to write to the angelos (messenger/leader) of seven specific churches. Each letter follows a consistent template:
Address to the church leader.
A specific description of Jesus.
Commendation (praise for what they are doing well).
Condemnation (critique of where they are failing).
A specific challenge.
An invitation to heed the Spirit.
A promise to those who overcome.
COACHING AND TRUST
Most people do not enjoy condemnation or challenges. We don't usually itch for a performance review or ask friends to point out our hypocrisies. To be coached hard, you must have high trust. We can listen to Jesus’ demands because we trust He loves us.
THE NECESSITY OF THE CHURCH
It is not possible to have Jesus apart from the church. We often want a pure, aesthetic religion found in sunsets or art, avoiding the messy people in the pews. We must negotiate the community of saints who still act like sinners before we get to the grand battles and heavenly ecstasies.
FOCUS: THE CHURCH IN PERGAMUM
REVELATION 2:12-13
To the angel of the church in Pergamum write: These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword. I know where you live—where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me, not even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city—where Satan lives.
Pergamum was the capital of the Roman province of Asia, a center for the imperial cult (emperor worship) and the altar of Zeus. While Rome held the power of the sword (the death penalty), Jesus is revealed as the one with the true sword of final judgment.
THE DANGER OF SEDUCTION
REVELATION 2:14-16
Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols and committed sexual immorality. Likewise, you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans. Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.
The church in Pergamum wasn't failing because of persecution; they were failing because of seduction.
THE BALAAM STRATEGY: If you cannot curse them, seduce them. It is about forfeiting your inheritance by compromising with the culture.
THE NICOLAITANS: They practiced a distorted view of grace. They claimed the spirit mattered but the body didn't, allowing them to participate in pagan feasts and immorality to survive socially and economically.
MODERN REFLECTION We may not face an imperial cult, but we face the same pressures:
Social acceptance: Where have you compromised to fit in?
Economic security: What do you justify in your job to stay safe?
Cheap Grace: Do we excuse habits of gossip, anger, or lust by saying, "Nobody is perfect"?
THE PROMISE TO THE VICTORIOUS
REVELATION 2:17
Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.
Jesus offers:
Hidden Manna: Provision that the world cannot give.
A White Stone/New Name: A private invitation and deep intimacy that replaces the false intimacy of the world.
THE WORTHY LAMB
When we are challenged, we often want to fight back. But John sweeps us from the struggling church into the throne room of heaven to see the Lamb.
REVELATION 5:9-10
And they sang a new song, saying: You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth.
He is worthy of our trust. He is worthy of our risk, our financial sacrifice, and our status.
----------
Where are you being seduced by the "American Dream" or social pressure?
Can you trust the rebuke of the Lamb who died for you?
Will you respond: Worthy is the Lamb!
