Life as a teenager or a young adult is an exciting and scary time. You wonder what will you do with your life. Who will be my people? Do people like me? What do I do with my romantic feelings?
Just like a football game, the direction of your whole life is often determined by what happens in the first quarter. Here are five pieces of biblical wisdom to apply in your early years:
1) Build Your Life on Jesus' Teaching. This is more than becoming a Christian; it is following and applying Jesus teachings in your life. Jesus was a really smart guy. It is a better way to live by following Jesus teachings.
For example, in Matthew 5:43-45, he tells us to pray for our enemies and turn the other cheek. Many people waste their lives by living with resentment and passive aggressive anger. Not a good way to live.
In Matthew 6:25-27, Jesus tells us not to worry and each day has enough trouble of its own. Worry creates mental fatigue. Releasing your worries to God is a good thing to do.
2) Success is purpose, not status or stuff. Too many people goals in life is working hard for people to think well of you and getting a good paycheck. You can have all those things and not be happy.
Jesus tells us in Luke 12:15, "Life does not consist of the abundance of your possessions." We were created for a relationship with God and when we find our life and purpose in him, we find meaning for our lives.
3) Build Character not Credentials. Over time, people come not only to trust what you can do but who you are. Are you a person of your world. We need people of character more and more in our world.
4) Take Chances and Trust God. There is a temptation to play it safe. It is wiser to take wise chances. Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us to trust in the Lord with all your heart and he will make your paths straight.
5) Find Friends who will pull you Upward. You are the sum total of your five closest friends. Choose your friends wisely. Research reveals good relationships keep us healthier and happier.
Application
1) What is really the foundation of your life?
2) What relationships am I cultivating?
3) Is there a risk God is calling you to take?
