Big Idea: God can use hardship to reveal the glory of Christ and His Good News of salvation.
I. The Reality of Hardship (vv. 24-25)
A. Paul’s joy is not in his suffering, but what is accomplished through his suffering. Paul is willing to endure hardship for Christ and His church because it ultimately brings God glory and builds up the Body of Christ (cf. 2 Tim. 2:8-10).
B. As Christians, we will face hardship (cf. Matt. 5:10-11; 2 Tim. 3:12). What can we learn from this?
1. We develop perseverance (cf. Js. 1:2-4).
2. We better empathize with others (cf. 2 Cor. 1:3-5).
3. We learn to rely on God (cf. 2 Cor. 1:8-10).
4. We further the work of Christ (v. 25).
C. To endure hardship is not simply to grin and bear it, but to find comfort in God’s sovereignty and see the work He is doing in and through our lives for His glory (cf. Phil. 4:13).
II. The Glory of God’s Word (vv. 25-27)
A. God’s Word is alive (cf. Heb. 4:12), and Paul serves the church best by proclaiming the Word in all its fullness, glory, and power (v. 25; cf. 1 Thes. 2:13)
B. Revealed to Paul is the wonderful truth of God’s eternal plan: The Good News for all people, Christ in you, the promise of future glory (v. 27; cf. Eph. 3:4-6).
III. The Glory of God’s Power (vv. 28-29)
A. Paul serves God with all his might, but he does not labor in his own strength. God’s power fills him to accomplish His work (v. 29). We are called to service, too. But like Paul, we need God’s power at work in us and through us (cf. Eph. 1:18-20).
B. Has your heart been gripped by the glory of Messiah Jesus and the ministry to which He has called us? Let’s pray together that God’s Word and the Holy Spirit would transform our hearts and minds to reflect Christ and bring glory to Him.
