A Testimony to Truth
John 18:37
Pastor Jerry Koller
In the New Testament, we find Jesus making the statement “I have come” only 5 times:
Pilate confronts Jesus (18:33): So You are a king? Jesus confirms Pilate’s question. You say correctly that I am a king.
Jesus then said, For this I have been born. He then clarified His purpose of being born to Pilate. For this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth.
According to Jesus, why did He come into the world? He came to testify to the truth. What does this mean?
Truth: martureo, which comes from the word martus.
• Martureo means to witness; to testify.
• It means to give evidence or proof, to publicly affirm in word and deed.
The Greek word for “truth” has to do with things that are not hidden.
• It has to do with reality and opposed to an illusion.
• It includes the idea of undeniable reality when tested.
• Truth is that which has been revealed by God, about God, about His creation, and about man and his responsibilities.
• In the bible, truth is a moral concept that is rooted in the character of God.
Truth cannot be relative because if God is truth, then He is also absolute. There is nothing relative about Him at all.
Because God is truth, there is no subjectivity that can be attached to Him.
• Truth is personified in Jesus Christ. (see John 1:14, 17; 14:6)
Some of the truths Jesus revealed (in word and deed) had to do with the kingdom—the kingdom of God, also referred to as the kingdom of heaven. (see Matt. 4:17, 23)
• He talked about what Kingdom living was like in His Sermon on the Mount.
• He taught His disciples the mysteries of the kingdom—things that were once unknown but now have been revealed.(see Mark 4:11)
• He taught about what the kingdom of God was like in different parables. • He taught and revealed truth regarding God the Father.
• He talked about His relationship to the Father.
• He talked about the will of the Father.
• He talked about how we are to worship the Father in Spirit and in truth. • He promised to send His disciples another Comforter, the Holy Spirit, also called the Spirit of truth.
Jesus also told Pilate: Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice. They hear it and embrace it for what it is—truth.
John mentions Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” (John 18:37a)
APPLICATION
6 Truths:
• 2 Cor. 4:3-4 - Here we find the truth that apart from divine intervention, divine illumination, the gospel would be hidden from our understanding.
• 1 Cor. 1:18 -The cross and what was accomplished on it—is foolishness to them.
• 1 Cor. 2:10 - It is through the work of God the Holy Spirit that we come to a place of understanding and embracing the Gospel.
• John 6:44 - The Holy Spirit draws those whom the Father has given to Christ. (also see John 16:13)
• John 8:31-32 - Freedom is being Christ

Summer Camp Scholarship Fundraiser

A special Christmas tree in the foyer is decorated with hand made offering envelopes to help raise funds for summer campers. These envelopes are marked with monetary amounts from $1-$100. If you'd like to make a donation to our Summer Camp scholarship fund, please take an envelope for the amount you'd like to donate and either drop it in the offering buckets at the back of the sanctuary or leave it on the desk in the office. You can take as many envelopes as you want, and of course donate whatever amount you wish.

Winter Weather is Here

Please use caution and extreme care when coming to church as the parking lot is very icy because of the cold temperatures. The front area by the main entrance/car port is ice free and recommended for drop-offs whenever possible. Also, if worship or other activities will be cancelled due to the weather, we will send an email, text, and post on Facebook. Please be sure to check your device before heading out.

Annual Meeting: 1/18/2026

Our Annual Meeting will be held in the sanctuary on Sunday, January 18, immediately following the morning worship service. All members are encouraged and expected to participate if possible.

A PDF copy of the 2026 budget information has been emailed to all members. If you would like to have a paper copy, please contact the church office.

We will vote on the following:
1. Approval of the 2026 budget.
2. Affirmation of the 2026 Elder Ministry Team: Patty Bales, Dan Marshall, Alyssa Newell, and Doug Zantello.
3. Proposed By-Law change.

Because the meeting is expected to be fairly short, we will not have a potluck.

For questions or more information, please contact the church office.

Hearing Assistance Devices Available

We have hearing assistance devices available during the morning worship service which allow the user to control the volume based on their individual needs. They are available from the Sound Booth at the rear of the sanctuary and are cleaned and sanitized after each use. For questions, see Rocky Starland.

Have You Considered?

Did you know that if your bank offers online services, you can set your tithe up as a regular ‘bill payment’ through your bank? This is a convenient option to help with continuity in giving and the ability for you to tithe even when you are on vacation or miss church. It eliminates having to wonder if you turned in your offering while you were gone! If you have questions or would like more information about how to utilize this convenient option, check with your banking institution or contact the church office.

Pop Cans = Scholarships

Don’t forget that your beverage can & bottle donations are used to fund teen scholarships for youth retreats, summer camps, special activities, etc. Please bring your recyclable items to the church anytime!
