Recap: The Promise
The Christmas story is the glorious proof that God has always had a plan, stretching back to His first promise of a Savior in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:15).
-God declares it, and it will be realized in His timing.
-What God speaks, He will do (Numbers 23:19).

The fulfillment of prophecy at the first Christmas assures us that all of God’s promises—of forgiveness, completion of His good work, and enduring faithfulness—remain true for the believer today.
Introduction: A Moment of Decision
God’s plan of salvation didn’t begin with human achievement—it started with human surrender. The eternal God chose to enter the world through the willingness of an ordinary young girl who said one costly but straightforward word: “Yes.”

Today, we look at Mary’s response to see what it means to partner with God’s extraordinary plan in our own lives.
Three Truths from Mary’s Surrender

1. God’s Plans Often Disrupt Our Own
Mary was preparing for marriage when the angel Gabriel appeared, leaving her “greatly troubled” (Luke 1:29). Her entire life trajectory was interrupted in a single moment.
-God often disrupts our comfortable plans to reveal His greater purpose (e.g., Abraham, Moses, the disciples).
-God’s interruptions are divine invitations.

“The vast majority of the miracles we see written in the Gospels are interruptions of what Jesus was currently doing.”

We must be willing to measure our obedience when God's timing or direction doesn't match our own.
2. Obedience Unlocks God’s Purpose
Mary was given a promise and an opportunity: she would conceive the Son of the Most High by the Holy Spirit. Her response is one of the greatest faith statements in Scripture: “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” (Luke 1:38, ESV)
-Mary said “yes” before she understood “how.”
-Obedience precedes understanding.
-Surrender precedes breakthrough.

Obedience has always been the doorway into God’s purpose, releasing heaven’s plan into earth (e.g., Noah building the ark before seeing rain, Peter casting his nets again).

3. God’s Plan Always Involves His Presence
Gabriel said, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you…” (Luke 1:35).
God’s plans are never powered by human capability—but rather by divine presence.
-Where God calls, His presence empowers (Acts 1:8).
-If a calling feels impossible on your own accord, you’re right—but God’s plan involves the power of His Spirit at work within you.
-Mary wasn't qualified, but she was overshadowed.

God’s presence is not an accessory to His plan—it is the power of His plan.

God is less concerned about your past and abilities (like Rahab, who is listed in Christ's lineage) and more concerned about His purpose.
Big Idea:

God’s plan of salvation required human surrender. Mary’s “yes” reveals what it means to partner with God’s plan.
Application: How Do We Say “Yes”?

1. Say yes to God even when you don’t understand it.
“Trust in the Lᴏʀᴅ with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.” (Proverbs 3:5–6 NLT)

Faith is not certainty—it’s surrender.

2. Make space for God’s interruptions.
Paul urges believers to “be careful how you live,” to discern God’s will, and to “make the most of every opportunity” (Ephesians 5:15–16 NLT).

God is often speaking in moments we label as inconvenient.
