An infant’s life is almost totally self-centered and selfish. Its whole concern is with its own comfort, hunger, attention, sleep. It is typical of a young child to be self-centered, but it should not be typical of an adult, especially a Christian adult. It is spiritually infantile to be jealous of and to cause strife among fellow believers

Self-centeredness is when I think everything is about me, selfishness is when I think everyone else should think everything is about me!!!

The writer of Hebrews has so much that he wants to teach these Jewish Believers but he is afraid they will not understand because of the SPIRITUAL SHAPE they are in. He has warned them of the stages they were going through

Drifting from the Word — 2:1-4 (neglect)
Doubting the Word — 3:7-4:13 (hard heart)
Dullness towards the Word — 5:11-6:20 (sluggishness, Lazy, Apathetic)

The word translated "dull" in Heb 5:11 is translated "slothful" in Heb 6:12. It refers to a condition of spiritual apathy and laziness that prevents spiritual development. These believers started on their "backward journey" by drifting from the Word(Heb 2:14), and then doubting the Word (Heb 3:7-4:13). As a result, they were now "dull of hearing"; that is, unable to listen to the Word, receive it, and act on it, one of the first symptoms of spiritual regression, or backsliding, is a dullness toward the Bible. Sunday School class is dull, the preaching is dull, anything spiritual is dull. The problem is usually not with the Sunday School teacher or the pastor, but with the believer himself.
