“The prayer ends with a somber and realistic note. Jesus believed that the great time of testing was coming upon the world, and that he would have to walk alone into its darkness. His followers should pray to be spared it. Even now, in the light of Easter and with the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit, we still need to pray in this way. There will come yet more times of crisis, times when all seems dark for the world, the church, and in our own hearts and lives. If we follow a crucified Messiah, we shouldn’t expect to be spared the darkness ourselves. But we must, and may, pray to be kept from its worst ravages, and to be delivered from evil, both in the abstract and in its personified form, ‘the evil one.’” -NT Wright
“It is, of course, a surprise to many people that there is a ‘struggle’ at all. Yes, they think, we find it difficult from time to time to practice our Christianity. We find it hard to forgive people, to pray regularly, to resist temptation, to learn more about the faith. But as far as they’re concerned that’s the end of it. They have never thought that their small struggles might be part of a larger campaign. They are like soldiers fighting in a fog: never seeing, and actually not knowing about, the others not far away in the same line of battle, let alone the other theaters where the war is continuing. In most major conflicts, of course, hardly any front-line soldiers know very much about the rest of the war. That’s the job of the generals. But at least they know that something is going on, and their bit is part of that larger whole. That’s the perspective that every Christian needs to maintain as we hold our bit of the line against attack.” - NT Wright

What other followers of Jesus will you pray for persistently?
When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower ____ with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in ____’s heart as you trust in him. ____’s roots will grow down into God’s love and keep ____ strong. And may ____ have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May ____ experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then ____ will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.
