Jesus in the Book of Genesis

Exodus is not just Israel’s story out of bondage. It is the Gospel in seed form; the blueprint of how God rescues sinners through a Redeemer.

1. Jesus Is the Great “I AM” (Exodus 3)
At the burning bush, God identifies Himself as:

“I AM WHO I AM”
Exodus 3:14

Jesus picks this up directly in the Gospels:
“I AM the bread of life.”
“I AM the good shepherd.”
“Before Abraham was, I AM.” (John 8:58)

Jesus isn’t merely echoing God’s name. He is claiming it.
Exodus 3 shows us Jesus’s eternal identity, Yahweh in human flesh.

2. Jesus Is the True Passover Lamb (Exodus 12)
Nothing in Exodus points to Jesus more clearly than Passover.
A spotless lamb
Killed in the place of the guilty
Blood applied to deliver from judgment
God “passes over” those covered by the blood

Paul says it plainly:
“Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.” 1 Corinthians 5:7

Passover isn’t a symbol. It is the shadow of the cross.

3. Jesus Is the One Who Brings the Greater Exodus (Exodus 6:6-7)
God promises to:
rescue
redeem
deliver
take Israel as His people

Jesus accomplishes a greater Exodus:
freedom from sin
redemption through His blood
deliverance from death
adoption into God’s family

Luke 9:31 says Jesus spoke with Moses and Elijah about His “exodus”
His death and resurrection that would free His people.

4. Jesus Is the Manna from Heaven (Exodus 16)
Israel receives bread from heaven.
But Jesus tells the crowd in John 6: “It was not Moses who gave you the bread… I AM the bread of life.”

Manna was temporary.
Jesus is eternal nourishment.

5. Jesus Is the Water from the Rock (Exodus 17)
Israel complains. God tells Moses to strike the rock.
Life-giving water pours out.

Paul gives the interpretation:
“The Rock was Christ.”
1 Corinthians 10:4

The Rock is struck so the people can live.
That’s the Gospel.

6. Jesus Is the Better Moses (Exodus 3-14; 32-34)
Moses:
intercedes for the people
pleads for forgiveness
leads them to freedom
speaks with God on their behalf
offers his life at one point for their salvation (32:32)

Jesus:
is the final and perfect mediator
intercedes eternally
lays down His life willingly
leads us out of bondage forever

Moses is the shadow.
Jesus is the substance.

7. Jesus Is the Tabernacle (Exodus 25–40)
Every part of the tabernacle points to Jesus:
The Lampstand -> Light of the world
The Table of Bread -> Bread of life
The Altar -> His sacrifice
The Veil -> His torn flesh opening access
The Ark -> God’s presence dwelling with His people
The Mercy Seat -> the place where blood covers sin

John 1:14 says: “The Word became flesh and tabernacled among us.” Jesus is God dwelling with His people.

8. Jesus Is the Lawgiver Who Fulfills the Law (Exodus 20)
Jesus ascends a mountain and teaches, just like Moses.
But He speaks with His own authority:

“But I say to you…”

He:
fulfills the law
explains the law
embodies the law
satisfies the law for us

The law given at Sinai finds its completion in the grace of Christ.

9. Jesus Is the True Deliverer From Bondage (Exodus 1-14)
Just as God brings Israel out of physical slavery…

Jesus brings humanity out of:
sin
shame
condemnation
spiritual death
the power of darkness

The Exodus isn’t just history.
It’s prophecy in story form.

10. Jesus Is the Presence (Exodus 13:21-22; 33:14)
God leads Israel by:
pillar of cloud
pillar of fire
His personal presence

Jesus promises:
“I am with you always.”

The presence that led Israel through the wilderness now lives within His people.

11. Jesus Is the One Who Mediates the New Covenant (Exodus 24)
Exodus 24 includes:
elders ascending the mountain
blood of the covenant
a shared meal in God’s presence

Jesus mirrors this:
disciples gathered
“This is the new covenant in My blood”
a shared meal pointing to the Kingdom

He fulfills the covenant meal and opens the way to dine with God forever.

12. Jesus Is the Lamb at the Center of the Story
From beginning to end, Exodus shouts:
“Look at the Lamb.”

The Lamb who saves.
The Lamb who leads.
The Lamb who dwells with His people.
The Lamb who is slain.
The Lamb who is worthy.

Revelation calls Jesus:
“The Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”

Exodus gives you the pattern.
The New Testament gives you the person.

Do Something
Pick one of these images of Jesus (Passover Lamb, Rock, Bread, Mediator, I AM, Shepherding Presence).
How does this reveal the grace of Jesus and free me to live in His finished work?
