Advent Week 1 – Hope

Advent Series – The Promise: Hope, Peace, Joy, Love
Luke 1:5-9
Around 20,000 priests in the nation of Israel

This is like playing in the Super Bowl for a priest

v.7- Childlessness in this day was looked down on (not looked on with pity as much as disdain)

Names
• Zechariah- God Remembers
• Elizabeth- His Oath
Luke 1:10-13
v.13- “Your prayer has been heard”

Zechariah is not in the sanctuary for himself, it is highly unlikely he is praying for himself in this moment

Likely been trained to pray for the nation, Roman occupation, etc.
Luke 1:14-17
John’s power- filled with the Spirit of God (v.15)

John’s prophecy
Luke 1:18-23
For Zechariah, God’s promise seems illogical, impossible

Zechariah’s lack of faith didn’t nullify God’s promise, His lack of faith simply prevented him from experiencing the fullness of God’s promise

• How often is this true of us people of God?
Luke 1:24-25
v.25- “He has looked with favor in these days to take away my disgrace among the people”
God remembers His children

God hears His children

God prepares His children
This Christmas season and moving forward, respond to the prophetic voice and life of John the Baptist
• Slaughter your idols, stop making excuses and concessions
• Turn up the volume and testify
• Be emboldened by the hope to come and let your life preach of that hope
God breaks His silence
God breaks His silence speaking about John. God continues speaking through the lips of John to prepare the people of God.
