The Decision to Sow
The problem isn’t that we forget what God’s done — it’s that we stop doing something with what He’s done.
He gives us faith to act, salvation to grow, and seed to sow — then He puts the ball back in our court and says, “Now, what will you do with it?”
Galatians 6:7–9
Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.
What Paul writes in Galatians isn’t just good advice — it’s a spiritual law woven into the fabric of how God’s world works.
The law of sowing and reaping isn’t something we have to fight against — it’s something we can work with.
We deceive ourselves all the time:
•We want harvest without seed.
•We want growth without surrender.
•We want fruit without faithfulness.
But God’s too good to let us live that lie.
He’s built His blessing into the process of sowing and reaping — so that the person you’re becoming, the life you’re living, the faith you’re building…
…will all grow out of the seeds you plant today.
1. Start with What You’ve Got
The problem isn’t lack; it’s perspective.
The moral of the Parable of the Talents is not about who had the most talents, it’s about the servants who took what was in their hand and sowed it.
What we call small, Jesus calls faith.
•In Luke 22, Jesus pointed to a widow who gave two small coins and said she’d given more than anyone.
•In John 6, a boy handed over his lunchbox and Jesus multiplied it and fed thousands.
Zechariah 4:10
Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.
God never calls small what we call small — He calls it seed to sow.
2. Stop Waiting for Perfect Conditions
Ecclesiastes 11: 4
“Whoever waits for perfect weather will never plant.”
The future you want doesn’t come from convenience — it comes from courage.
What we sow today shapes the harvest we see tomorrow.
3. Sow Where It Matters Most
Galatians 6:8
“For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption,
but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.”
Dallas Willard
‘Grace is not opposed to effort; it is opposed to earning.’
If you’re unhappy with your harvest, check your sowing.
•The flesh will always pull you toward what’s quick and easy — instant gratification, self-interest, comparison.
•But the Spirit leads you toward life, joy, and peace.
4. Stay the Course Until the Harvest Comes
Every promise of God comes with a process, and every process takes time.
Galatians 6:9–10
“Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean God’s not doing it.
Jesus told a story about this type of mystery.
Mark 4:26–29
“The Kingdom of God is as if someone should scatter seed on the ground.
Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows—though he does not know how.
All by itself the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head.
As soon as the grain is ready, the farmer comes and harvests it, for the harvest time has come.”
The farmer doesn’t understand how the seed grows — he just knows it does.
There’s mystery in how, but there’s certainty in Who.
Philippians 1:6
“He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion.”
The same God who started the work will finish it.
“Take heart” comes from the Greek word tharseó meaning to be bold, confident, and filled with courage.
•To the paralysed man: “Take heart, your sins are forgiven.”
•To the woman with the issue of blood: “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.”
•To the disciples in the storm: “Take heart; it is I — don’t be afraid.”
•And before the cross: “Take heart; I have overcome the world.”
The problem isn’t that we forget what God’s done — it’s that we stop doing something with what He’s done.
