Dig Deeper:
1. Have you ever been judged by someone? How does it feel?
2. How about judging someone else? Why did you judge them? How does it feel to judge someone else?
3. Read Romans 1:29-31. As we begin chapter two of Romans, what is the first word? What is the therefore there for? Fill in the blanks: Because of ___________ (summarize 1:29-31) that was discussed in Romans 1:29-31, _____________ (summarize Romans 2:1).
4. Who does Paul include in Romans 2:1. Is there anyone who is exempt?
5. Why is it easy to spot sin in someone else’s life but difficult to see in our own life?
6. Read Romans 2:2. How is God’s judgment different from man’s judgment? Why?
7. Read Romans 2:3. What does God’s judgment (His righteous response to sin and disobedience) tell us about Him?
8. Read Romans 2:4. Describe an example of a time when God’s kindness led you to repent.
9. Describe how God is rich not only in kindness but in restraint and patience. How is His kindness displayed in the restraint and patience?
10. Why does kindness result in heart change more so other methods?
11. How does our kindness draw someone towards Jesus?
12. Read Matthew 7:1-5. What does it mean to “first take the beam of wood out of your eye”? Why does it allow us to see clearly?
13. Read Romans 2:5. What is the response to God’s kindness that is shared in this passage? Why is the heart “hardened” when it is unrepentant?
14. Read Romans 2:6-8. Is Paul saying that we save ourselves by doing good works? Why is the motivation behind what we do important?
15. Read Romans 1:16-17. How do the righteous live?
16. Read Romans 2:9-10. What does Paul mean when he says that a human being “does evil” or “does what is good”? Provide examples of “evil” and “good.”
17. Read Romans 2:11. What does this mean? How is this another act of kindness from God?
18. Read Romans 2:12-15. What does it mean that Gentiles “do not by nature have the law”? When they “do what the law demands,” how does that show that “the work of the law is written on their hearts”?
19. How does Romans 2:12-15 defend what Paul says in Romans 2:11?
20. Read Romans 2:16. How do our “competing thoughts either accuse or even excuse” us? What does God see that no one else sees?
21. Read 1 John 1:9. What does it mean to confess our sins to God? How are we cleansed from all unrighteousness?
22. Read James 5:16. Describe a time in your life when you’ve lived this out. What was the outcome?
Live It Out:
Is your private life consistent with your public profession?
Read 1 John 1:9. If you want to be forgiven of your sin, bring it to God. If you’ve never turned to Jesus, know this: Jesus loves you deeply. He left Heaven for you. Today, you can repent and believe in Jesus Christ. You can be forgiven and made new. You can come to faith in Jesus by responding to His invitation. Call upon Jesus today. Repent (turn) from your sins and believe in Jesus. Pray: “Lord Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for my sin. I believe that you lived, died, and rose again. I surrender my life to follow You. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”
Read James 5:16. If you want to be free of your sin, bring it to another person. Sin grows bigger and stronger in the dark. What are you holding onto that no one knows about? What sin is holding you hostage, in bondage as a slave? What fears keep you from sharing it with someone else? This week, if you are holding onto sin and want to feel the freedom from that bondage, first repent to God. Then, share it with a trusted person in your life. When you confess and pray with someone else, James 5:16 tells us that you may be healed.
