Bankruptcy : “two ways: gradually, then suddenly.” ~ Ernest Hemingway
The rhythm of the Kingdom is almost always "gradually, then suddenly."
We often miss the gradually.
God’s miracles often look instantaneous, but they are built on generations of faithfulness and small acts of obedience.
Exodus 1:15–17 (NIV)
The king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, whose names were Shiphrah and Puah, and said, “When you are helping the Hebrew women during childbirth on the delivery stool, if you see that the baby is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, let her live.” The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them; they let the boys live.”
Exodus 12:40–42 (NIV)
Now the length of time the Israelite people lived in Egypt was 430 years.
At the end of the 430 years, to the very day, all the Lord’s divisions left Egypt. Because the Lord kept vigil that night to bring them out of Egypt, on this night all the Israelites are to keep vigil to honor the Lord for the generations to come.
The First Domino: Faithful Obedience
Exodus 1:17
“The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them; they let the boys live.”
The Power of the Two-Inch Domino
Zechariah 4:10
“Do not despise the day of small beginnings.”
1) The Long Game: God's Timing and Legacy
Exodus 12:40
“Now the length of time the Israelite people lived in Egypt was 430 years.”
2) God’s Timing is Perfect, Not Instant
Exodus 12:41
“At the end of the 430 years, to the very day, all the Lord’s divisions left Egypt.”
God’s timing may appear delayed, but it is never late.
The 'suddenly' is a moment of revelation, not a moment of creation.
3) Legacy is Intergenerational
Legacy isn't what you accomplish; it's what others accomplish because of your faithfulness.
The Two-Inch Domino
So, how do we live in this space between the gradually and the suddenly?
Don’t give up in the “gradually.” Keep being faithful with your two-inch dominoes—God’s “suddenly” will come right on time.
Where are you feeling stuck in the “gradually” today?
Be Faithful in…
1. Your Character Dominoes
What small, moral choice is God asking you to make today?
2. Your Relational Dominoes
The world is a lonely place, and the small effort of connecting matters.
3. Your Generational Dominoes:
What spiritual seed can you plant today that you may never see grow?
The question is not whether God will act; it’s whether we’ll keep trusting Him long enough to see the suddenly unfold.
