THE IMPORTANCE OF THE HEART - Calloused Hearts

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE HEART - Calloused Hearts

In "The Problem of the Calloused Heart", Pastor Jim unpacks Jesus’ words in Matthew 13:15 — a verse that connects seeing, hearing, understanding, and healing. When Jesus spoke of people with “calloused hearts,” He revealed that the real barrier to spiritual growth isn’t just what we fail to see or hear — it’s what our hearts have grown dull to. This message explores what causes that hardness, how it affects our ability to recognize God’s truth, and what steps we can take to open our hearts again to His healing work. 10 The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?”
11 He replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.
12 Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.
13 This is why I speak to them in parables: “Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand.
14 In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: “You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.
15 For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’
Matthew 13:10-15 (NIV)
How does a heart become calloused?

Your heart is the seat of your hearing and seeing.
44 For no one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them to me, and at the last day I will raise them up.
John 6:44 (NLT)
44 No one is able to come to Me unless the Father Who sent Me attracts and draws him and gives him the desire to come to Me…
John 6:44 (AMPC)
44 No one is able to come to Me unless the Father Who sent Me attracts and draws him and gives him the desire to come to Me, and [then] I will raise him up [from the dead] at the last day.
John 6:44 (AMPC)
Your heart is the place where you gain understanding.
7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The LORD doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
1 Samuel 16:7 (NLT)
10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.
Romans 10:10 (NLT)
26 And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart.
Ezekiel 36:26 (NLT)
Your heart is where Jesus’ healing begins.
15 For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’
Matthew 13:15 (NIV)
23 Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
Proverbs 4:23 (NLT)
