Key Verse to Memorize
Colossians 3:12 (NIV)
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

The Order Matters: Identity First
We are not called to earn God’s love by being good.
We are called to live from the identity He has already given us.

Your old identity died with Jesus on the cross.
In Christ, you are now:
Chosen | Holy | Dearly Loved
Behavior doesn’t create identity — it catches up to it.

The order is not – there are things for you to put on – to do – so that you are holy and dearly loved.
The order is – ‘as’ – now put on.”

Christianity vs. Other Identities
From Others (family, culture, approval)
Strengths: Clear expectations, stability
Pitfalls: Trapped in roles; people-pleasing; worth changes daily

From Within (follow your heart, self-validate)
Strengths: Freedom
Pitfalls: Crushing; shifting desires; can’t meet your own standards

From Christ
Unshakable love; known fully, loved anyway
Received by surrender, not earning

Living from Your Identity
Because you are holy – put on holy drip.

Fail without being crushed.
Succeed without arrogance.
Identity never changes.

3 Practical Steps

1. Pray the Truth into Your Bones
“I am chosen, holy, and dearly loved.”
“I am God’s beloved child.”
Let this truth pull you like a lazy river.

2. Pause in Anxiety or People-Pleasing Moments
Ask: What am I feeling? What am I trying to prove?
Name the lie: “My worth depends on this moment.”

3. When a Virtue Feels Impossible, Ask: What Lie Am I Believing?
No compassion? → “They don’t deserve it.”
No patience? → “My time matters more.”
Pray: Holy Spirit, help me see them as You do.

Jesus: The Perfect Example
Return to his example when motivation fades.

Compassion – Deep sympathy + action to relieve suffering
Fed 5,000
Matthew 14:13–21 (NIV)
When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.” Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.” ... Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all ate and were satisfied...

Kindness – Tender goodness and mercy
Healed the leper
Matthew 8:1–4 (NIV)
When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed from his leprosy...
Ate with Zacchaeus
Luke 19:1–10 (NIV)
Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy... Jesus said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” ... All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.” But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor...”

Humility – Others first; not better than anyone
Washed disciples’ feet
John 13:1–17 (NIV)
...Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power... he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet... When he had finished... he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done for you? ... Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.”

Gentleness – Power under control; considerate, calm
Healed the servant’s ear at arrest
Luke 22:47–53 (NIV)
While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas... was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” ... When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?” And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.

Patience – Enduring without anger
Jesus put up with his disciples slow learning curve
