1 Corinthians 7
BeFree Church is Evangelical, not fundamentalist, not liberal:
Evangelical = in essentials unity, in non-essentials charity, in all things Christ
Fundamentalism = everything is an essential
Liberalism = there are no essentials but love, Jesus just a moral teacher
Marriage in 1st century Roman Empire
-marriage for fulfillment and happiness foreign to ancient times
-girls were married as early as 12
-widows often young by our standards
-patriarchal society, men ruled
-wives who divorced husbands lost custody of children
“By divine appointment marriage and sexuality go together, as do singleness and abstinence from sex; what God has joined together, humans should not separate.”
How are we to live in a culture of sexual confusion and immorality?
We are to live sexually pure whether married or single.
7:1-5 - God’s Design is to Enjoy Sex in Marriage
Scripture defies cultural conventions on sexuality, then and now
-sexless marriage not a recipe for happiness unless couple agrees to it
-assumes marriage alone is rightful place for sex
-wife - husband have an obligation to each other
-mutuality in marriage not a patriarchal hierarchy of power
-speaks to wife as directly as the husband
-women have sexual needs/rights as well as men
-God designed sex for joy not just procreation
-1st century Christians mocked for sexual fidelity
7:6-9 - God is Good with Singleness or Marriage
In USA = 29% of households are single-person homes
4 in 10 adults 25-54 yrs are unpartnered

7 Myths about Singleness, Sam Alberry
7:10-16 - Marriage and Divorce
Reasons to Stay Married
-marriage is God’s design, provides God’s approval and blessing
-provides spouse a living witness of the Good News
-continues a marriage and home adding peace to the world
Divorce is Valid When Vows are Violated:
-Adultery - Matthew 19
-Abandonment - 1Corinthians 7
-Abuse - Exodus 21
7:17-24 - Be Faithful Where You Are (Bloom where you are planted)
7:25-40 - Life points to Christ’s Return, Live for that
