A posture of humility (vv.14-16)

Why is he so prayerfully desperate in vv.14-16? Because he knows the people in the church of Ephesus need something that only God can give.

A prayer for power - to know and experience the love of God
(vv.17-19)

When you know and experience the love of God, then you will be drawn to God in such a way that what comes out of your very being is holiness and obedience.

Paul is not hoping that they have an intellectual understanding or appreciation for God's love, but he is asking God that they might have power to grasp the dimensions of God's love and EXPERIENCE it.

Paul prays we would live in God's love three ways in vv.17-19:
1. He prays that you would be secure in God's love (v.17)

2. He prays we would know that God's love is boundless (v.18)

3. He prays this love blows our minds and fills our hearts (v.19)

The gospel answers: You haven't done enough.
You never could, but Jesus has.
