NEGATIVE principles: If you want to lose your Child(ren),

(1) Parent them as if they are the CENTER of the WORLD

(2) Parent them by building FENCES around them.
POSITIVE principle: If you want to parent the HEART of your CHILD(ren), CENTER your parenting around the WORD and WONDER of CHRIST
Six Ways to Center Parenting around the Word and Wonder of Christ:

1. You are to Steward/Manage them for the Lord.

Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him. (Psalm 127:3)

I [Hannah] asked the Lord to give me this boy, and he has granted my request. Now I am giving him to the Lord, and he will belong to the Lord his whole life. (1 Samuel 1:27–28)
2. You are to Teach them about the Lord.

Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. (Exodus 20:12)

These commandments thatI giveyou today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. (Deuteronomy 6:6–7)

- Name of the Lord
- Authority under the Lord
- Dependence on the Lord
- Loyalty to the Lord
Parenting Principle: You can’t TEACH what you haven’t LEARNED.
3. You are to Train them up in the Lord.

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. (Proverbs 22:6)
TRAINING is turning our TEACHING into practice! (through the stages of life)
Train them in what it means to be human after the image and likeness of Christ:
- Relate
- Create
- Operate
4. You are to Discipline them in the Lord.

Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him. (Proverbs 13:24)

Root Word in Hebrew for Son = “to build”
Discipline is a Discipleship Tool—Targeting the Heart, as parents guide children back to building a life pleasing to Christ.
Parenting Principle: Your DISCIPLINE should be appropriate to the child’s stage of DEVELOPMENT.
You should never DISCIPLINE:
- Out of anger
- In a threatening/unsafe way (Ex: to humiliate or embarrass)
- In your own power
5. You are to Model for them a life in/for/to the Lord.

Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them upinthe training and instruction of the Lord. (Ephesians 6:4)

Parents, don’t come down too hard on your children or you’ll crush their spirits. (MSG—Colossians 3:21)
Parenting Principle: We don’t always get parenting right, in the image and likeness of Jesus!

6. You are to Tell them the Story of the Lord—and how their story fits within His Story!
