When conflict arises, our tendency is often to retreat or retaliate. Share a funny or light example (like a classic “car ride disagreement” or household moment) where that tendency showed up.
Last week we talked about how we often react instead of responding in ways that honor others and honor Jesus. This week focused on what it means to engage conflict — not by retreating or retaliating, but by responding in the way of Jesus. When conflict arises, which side do you usually lean toward — retreating (avoiding, dismissing, ignoring) or retaliating (getting even, proving a point)? What do you think drives that reaction?
In Matthew 5:38–39, Jesus calls us to turn the other cheek — to rise above the desire to “get even.” Why do you think responding this way often feels like losing? How does it actually lead to freedom or peace instead?
Galatians 5:22–23 reminds us that the Holy Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Which of those “fruits” do you most need the Spirit to grow in you when conflict happens?
Pastor Jonathan laid out four rules of engagement for responding to conflict - Pause, Understand, Forgive, How can I help? Which one is hardest for you to live out, and what could it look like to start practicing it this week?
Imagine Jesus sitting right beside you during your next conflict — how might His presence change your tone, words, or actions?
Prayer:
“Jesus, thank You for showing us a better way to respond when conflict comes. Help us pause before reacting, understand before judging, forgive as You’ve forgiven us, and seek peace that honors You. Remind us that You’re with us in every moment — even in the tension. Amen.”
