"'The Lord our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. Not with our ancestors did the LORD make this covenant, but with us, who are all of us here alive today.' (Dt 5:2-3) Now, on the face of it, what Moses says is wrong. The people to whom he preaches are not that first generation of Israelites who stood at the base of Mt. Sinai. Growth Group / Personal Reflection Questions
1. In Deuteronomy 5:3, Mose reminds Israel of God's covenant made, "with us..." Does seeing the Ten Commandments in the context of a relationship with God - not just ancient rules - change the way you view them? If so, how does obedience feel like relationship or requirement?
2. Can the Ten Commandments feel life giving? If so, how? How might rediscovering the life giving purpose of God’s Law reshape our faith today?
3. Moses called the next generation to renew the covenant. What might it mean or look like for our generation to do the same? What might that look like for our faith, community, and/or culture?
4. The Ten Commandments begin with God declaring, “I am the LORD your God who brought you out of Egypt.” How does remembering God’s saving acts influence the way we love God and others?
5. In what ways have you read scripture differently in different seasons of life?
6. How has your perception of scripture changed over the years?
7. What is a bible passage that you read earlier in life that has had its meaning change for you?
