The Text In Context
1. Biblical Law
2. Law vs. Grace?
3. Expression of God's Grace
4. Statutes and Ordinances
5. Approach Humbly
6. Sermon on the Mount
1. Read Matthew 5 - 7, which is called Jesus' Sermon on the Mount.
2. Find one command that Jesus discusses that stands out to you.
3. Put this command into practice this next week.
1. In Deut. 4:7, Moses asks, “What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the Lord our God is near us?” In what ways have you experienced God’s nearness in everyday life? How might that awareness change the way we approach prayer or decision-making?
2. How familiar are you with biblical law? What benefits do you think people derive from biblical law? What are the challenges with biblical law?
3. How was biblical law a benefit to ancient Israel as they prepared to enter the land God had promised them?
4. Why do you think God and Moses chose to issue more laws to Israel at this point? They already have the laws from Exodus and Leviticus. Why add more?
5. How might the law reveal God's grace to us?
6. In Deut. 4:9, Moses tells the people to teach these things to "... your children and grandchildren". What have you found most helpful in passing faith on to younger generations — whether your own family or others? What challenges or opportunities do you see in doing that today?
7. Following this weekend's scripture, in Deut. 4:15-19, Moses warns against idolatry. What kinds of “modern idols” can quietly take God’s place in our lives today? How do you guard against when something good begins to take on idolatrous importance?
