Series Description:
Fasting is one of the most powerful yet forgotten spiritual practices in the church today. All throughout Scripture, fasting preceded a mighty move of God—whether it was breakthrough in battle, repentance that led to revival, or fresh direction from the Lord. From Moses on the mountain, to Esther standing for her people, to Jesus beginning His ministry, God’s people have always turned to fasting to hear His voice more clearly and to prepare their hearts for what He was about to do.

In this brand-new two-part series, Lord, Teach Me How to Fast, we’ll rediscover the lost art of fasting and unlock the spiritual strength, clarity, and power that comes when we humble ourselves before God. Together, we’ll learn how fasting isn’t about what we’re giving up—it’s about Who we’re drawing close to.

As we step into the future God has for our church, we’re asking every believer to take this step of faith and commit to fasting one day each week. Let’s prepare our hearts, align with God’s will, and believe for revival in our city and beyond.
Message Description:
This message unpacks fasting as a spiritual discipline—not a diet or performance, but a way to grow closer to God, seek breakthrough, and prepare for spiritual battles through self-denial and prayer.
Fasting is NOT:
1: Fasting is NOT a diet.
2. Fasting is NOT how we make God love us.
3. Fasting is NOT a way to look more spiritual.
Jesus gives the ASSUMPTION that we fast!
Fasting IS for:
1. Taking an opportunity to deny ourselves pleasure.
2. Finding humility before God
3. Finding a spiritual breakthrough.
If you haven’t ever tried fasting, whats keeping you from trying it?
How do we start? Just like Bible reading, start small.
CHALLENGE:
This week, try a sun-up to sundown fast!
Let's prepare for the battle. Let's run the race well like Paul
asks us to!
TALK IT OVER

Reflection & Application

1. What stood out to you most from the message on fasting?
Was it something new, convicting, or encouraging?

2. How do you define a spiritual discipline in your own words?
Why do you think fasting is often overlooked compared to others like prayer or Bible reading?

3. Have you ever fasted before?
If so, what was your experience? If not, what has held you back?

4. Jesus assumes fasting will be part of our walk with God (Matthew 6:16-18).
How does that challenge your current perspective or spiritual habits?

5. What are some ways people can misuse fasting or turn it into something God never intended?
How can we keep our motives pure?

Going Deeper

6. Fasting is about denying ourselves to draw closer to God.
What are some pleasures or distractions you sense God might be asking you to temporarily give up?

7. Mark 9:29 speaks about spiritual breakthrough through prayer and fasting.
Is there an area in your life—or in our community, nation, or church—where you are longing for breakthrough?

8. Which of these barriers—fear, pride, or apathy— resonates most with you when it comes to fasting?
What could it look like to overcome that with God’s help?

Next Steps & Encouragement

9. “3 miles up and 3 miles down” was used as a metaphor for spiritual discipline.
How do you think building discipline prepares us for the
spiritual battles we face?

10. Looking at your spiritual life today, how might embracing the discipline of fasting change your walk with God—and what’s holding you back from taking that step?
How can we support one another in taking that step?
