THE SIN NO ONE TALKS ABOUT
SCRIPTURE
The apostles were performing many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers were meeting regularly at the Temple in the area known as Solomon’s Colonnade. (Because of what happened with Ananias and Sapphira) no one else dared to join them, even though all the people had high regard for them. Yet more and more people believed and were brought to the Lord—crowds of both men and women. As a result of the apostles’ work, sick people were brought out into the streets on beds and mats so that Peter’s shadow might fall across some of them as he went by. Crowds came from the villages around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those possessed by evil spirits, and they were all healed. The high priest and his officials who were Sadducees, were filled with jealousy. They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail. Acts 5:12-18
THE FIRST JEALOUSY
“I will ascend to heaven. I will raise my throne above the stars of God… I will make myself like the Most High.” Isaiah 14:13-14
The Fujiwhara Effect
Jealousy is the child of dissatisfaction and comparison.
JEALOUSY & PEOPLE
We Shouldn’t Be Jealous Of Others.
Jealousy affects us on a physical level.
This made Cain very angry, and he looked dejected. Genesis 4:5
A peaceful heart leads to a healthy body. Jealousy is like cancer in the bones. Proverbs 14:30
“Envy is a unique predictor of both depression and anxiety.” Xiang, 2020
Socials tell us there is a perfect body, a perfect image, a perfect life. But this is a perfect lie!
Jealousy affects us on a relational level.
When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him. Genesis 37:4
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Philippians 2:3
We should protect others from becoming jealous of what God has given us.
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast. 1 Corinthians 13:4
Jealousy affects us on an emotional level.
When Rachel saw that she wasn’t having any children for Jacob, she became jealous of her sister. She pleaded with Jacob, “Give me children, or I’ll die!” Genesis 30:1
“If you compare and compete, you will live in defeat.” Pastor Darren Hileman
Jealousy affects us on a mental level.
When the victorious Israelite army was returning home after David had killed the Philistine, women from all the towns of Israel came out to meet King Saul. They sang and danced for joy with tambourines and cymbals. This was their song: “Saul has killed his thousands, and David his ten thousands!”
This made Saul very angry. “What’s this? They credit David with ten thousands and me with only thousands. Next they’ll be making him their king!” So from that time on Saul kept a jealous eye on David. 1 Samuel 18:6-9
Saul should’ve understood that David’s success was his success!
Jealousy affects us on a spiritual level.
It was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over to Pilate. Matthew 27:18
We Should Recognize Jealousy
Jealousy is easy to see in others, but tough to see in ourselves.
When I downplay someone’s achievement.
When I constantly want what someone else has.
When I don’t want what someone else has, but I don’t want them to have it either.
When I hope someone will struggle so I’m not left behind.
When someone wins and it irritates me.
We Should Defeat Jealousy
“Sin (jealousy) is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.” Genesis 4:7
When I feel jealous, I should pray for that person.
When I feel jealous, I should promote that person.
When I feel jealous, I should praise that person.
When I feel jealous, I should ponder my blessings.
“Envy is the art of counting the other fellow’s blessings instead of your own.” H. Coffin
Get rid of all evil behavior. Be done with all deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy, and all unkind speech.
1 Peter 2:1
We Should Be Jealous For Others
I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. 2 Corinthians 11:2
JEALOUSY & GOD
God Isn’t Jealous Of Us.
Make no mistake! God is not jealous of you. He isn’t jealous of anything or anyone.
God Is Jealous For Us.
“You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods.” Exodus 20:5
