Minor Prophets: Amos

Minor Prophets: Amos

The Minor Prophets may be short books, but they carry a major message: God is always calling His people back to Him. Through their words we see God’s faithfulness, mercy, and justice revealed in every season. This series will help us hear their voices today and find our way back to God.

WHO ARE THE PROPHETS

The prophets were men called by God to speak into the real issues of their day. They weren’t fortune-tellers predicting the future, but truth-tellers helping people find their way back to God.

THREE CONSISTENT TRUTHS

God is holy.

God takes sin seriously.

God pursues His people with relentless love and grace.

Malachi 3:7b

“Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the Lord Almighty.”
MESSAGE OF AMOS

To truly worship God is to become a people whose lives overflow with justice and righteousness.

Amos 1:1

The words of Amos, one of the shepherds of Tekoa—the vision he saw concerning Israel two years before the earthquake, when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam son of Jehoash[a] was king of Israel.

All sin bends one of two ways: away from God in idolatry or away from people in injustice.

Amos 5:11-12

“You levy a straw tax on the poor and impose a tax on their grain. Therefore, though you have built stone mansions, you will not live in them… For I know how many are your offenses and how great your sins. There are those who oppress the innocent and take bribes and deprive the poor of justice in the courts.”

AMOST TEACHES US

1. The Worship God Does Not Want

2. The Call to a Rightly Ordered Life

3. The River of Justice

Amos 5:24

But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!

True worship is not measured by how high we raise our hands on Sunday, but by how we live out God’s heart Monday through Saturday.

hey
These questions are here to help you lead a great small group. Whether you meet at home, at work, or at church, use this simple practice:
E – Encourage
Focus on encouraging each other. Start with a win or something good.
S – Scripture
Read the passage from Sunday out loud. Let it lead the way.
P – Pray
Use the discussion questions. End by praying together.
N – Next Step
Look for one way to help each other take a next step with Jesus.
You do not need to know it all. Just show up, stay open, and trust that God will move.
GROUP QUESTION FOR TODAY'S MESSAGE

1. When you were a kid, what was the first thing that made you say, ‘That’s not fair!’?

2. If you could only listen to one worship song for the rest of the year, which one would you pick and why?

3. Where in your life is it easiest to “look spiritual” on the outside but be distant from God on the inside?

3. Jesus warned against honoring God with our lips while our hearts are far away. What’s the difference between struggling in your faith and living with hypocrisy?

4. When you hear the word “justice,” do you think of big issues (like poverty or racism) or small, everyday things (like fairness, kindness, or honesty)? Why?

5. Read Amos 5:24. Where do you see injustice in your community, and what’s one practical way you can let God’s justice “flow through you” this week?
