John 12:27–50: The End of Jesus’ Public Ministry

Week 30 in a series on the book of John.

Locations & Times

Phoenix

15825 N 35th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85053, USA

Sunday 10:30 AM

Vs. 27–30
• Throughout the Gospel of John, we are told Jesus’ hour had not yet come.
o John 2:4, John 7:6, John 8:20
• Now, Jesus’ hour had come.
• Although His soul was troubled, Jesus was determined to complete His purpose.
o Mark 14:34, Mark 14:36
• “Father glorify Your name.”
o The only way that the Father’s name will be glorified is through Jesus’ obedience to the will of the Father.
• Are you Glorifying God in your purpose?
o God’s will for your life.
1. That you would be saved.
~ 1 Timothy 2:3-4
2. That you would be filled with the Holy Spirit.
~ 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
3. That you would be sexually pure.
~ 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4
4. That you would submit to proper authority.
~ 1 Peter 2:18
5. That you would suffer for doing what is right.
~ 1 Peter 3:17
• God’s voice spoke for the benefit of the people.

Vs. 31–33
• With the coming of Christ, and his death/resurrection, judgement was now upon the world as to what they do with Jesus. If they reject Him, they are judged, if they accept him, they are saved.
• At the cross, the ruler of this world, Satan, was cast down (Gen. 3:15).
• By Jesus being lifted up from the earth (crucified as explained in verse 33), then Jesus will draw all men to Himself.
o Unlimited atonement: Jesus died for the sins of each person who has ever lived.

Vs. 34–36
• The people were perplexed as to what kind of “Son of Man” Jesus was claiming to be.
• Jesus doesn’t answer their question, but implores them to believe in the Light so they may become sons of the light.

Vs. 37–40
• Why can’t people believe?
o In Scripture there are three specific places where we see God allow people’s sin to accomplish His purposes.
1. Joseph being sold into slavery.
~ Genesis 50:20
2. The hardening of Pharaoh’s heart.
~ Exodus 9:12
3. Jesus’ Crucifixion.
~ Acts 2:23, Acts 4:28
o It is important to emphasize that the fact Scripture tells us this is what happened in these three instances means this is not the way that God typically operates.
o This blinding of some of the Jewish people was for the purpose of Jesus being crucified and resurrected.
o The blindness was temporary (Acts 6:7).

Vs. 41
• When did Isaiah see Jesus’ glory?
o John 12:40 quotes Isaiah 6:10, which is what John is referencing when he says that Isaiah saw Jesus’ glory.
- Isaiah 6:1-3
~ Isaiah saw Jesus sitting on the throne in all His glory.
~ Therefore the Lord (Yahweh) is Jesus.

Vs. 42–43
• Some of the rulers believed in Jesus, but were afraid to confess Him because of their fear of the Pharisees.
o These men were believers who weren’t disciples.
• Are you more concerned with the approval of men or with the approval of God?

Vs. 44–50
• These verses seem to be a general summary of Jesus’ teachings to the nation of Israel.
• Chapter 12 brings Jesus’ public ministry to a close.
