The Old Testament points to Jesus.
The account of Jonah displays salvation coming to a nation of unbelieving people after the prophet is saved from a watery grave and receives new life.
When the Pharisees question Jesus' authority and demand a sign, Jesus says they will be given the sign of Jonah…

Jesus points to his own death and resurrection as the ultimate sign of his authority and proof that he is the LORD.
Jesus’ death and resurrection offers each of us that same new life.

Jonah didn’t pray when the storm came.
Jonah didn’t cry for help when he was thrown into the sea.
Jonah prays when he faces imminent death—when he is descending into a watery grave, when he is loosing consciousness.
Don’t wait to call on the Lord.
Don’t wait to remember him.
Don’t wait pray to him.

What is Jonah sacrificing?
He is on death’s doorstep.
He is laying down his sin…his opinions, wants, desires, self-righteous judgement of others.
Sometimes, the Lord allows us to come to a moment where we are finally willing to give up the things we cling to and elevate above him, to lay down our idols, because we recognize our desperate need for him.

After three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, Jonah is raised to new life and given another chance.
The Lord heard Jonah in his distress.
The Lord hears us in our distress.
The Lord shows great mercy to Jonah. Mercy that Jonah does not feel for Nineveh.

We have all been like Jonah, dead in our sins and because of what Jesus has done, we have all been given a chance to be raised to new life.
Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

COMMUNION: REMEMBERING WHAT CHRIST HAS DONE FOR US ON THE CROSS, AND EXPERIENCING HIS PRESENCE TODAY.
COMMUNION
We would like to invite anyone who has professed faith in Jesus to participate in receiving communion with us this morning.
Communion elements will be passed out by our ushers towards the close of service.

Are you ready to be baptized? In the Bible, when people come to faith in Christ, and they ask "what do I do now?" the answer is consistently baptism. In baptism, we identify with Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection as we lay down our lives in the water, and come to new life in Christ. If you believe Jesus is Lord and are ready to make that declaration in your life, sign up and we would love to baptize you.
