Worship is not just music.
Music is a form of worship but not the complete definition of worship.
Worship in Hebrew is "Shachah" which means to bow down.
Romans 12:1 “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.”
Here are several aspects and contributors that help enrich our understanding of worship:
1. Confession:
When is the last time you thought about confession as a form?
Confession is important to our worship because it prepares our soul to engage with God. When we confess he draws us near to him as he draws near to us.
1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
When we confess God is faithful to forgive.
Worship is sacrificial submission where we are presenting our whole lives, including our thoughts, actions and words.
We confess when we come to accept Christ at the start of our relationship with God.
And it also involves daily confessing to God and others so that he can transform us to be more like Christ.
2. Awe & Wonder:
Awe & wonder draw us into to worshipping God.
Let him take our breath away. Stand in amazement.
Often we are busy and distracted. Worship draws our focus toward him.
The story of Mary and Martha (Luke 10:38-42):
Awe and wonder begin with sitting at Jesus feet captivated and drawn in by the words of the Lord.
Easy when we feel close but not in suffering... Not when we’re confused, angry, disoriented etc
The story of Lazarus, Mary & Martha (John 11):
Offer our whole bodies even when we don’t want to or feel like we just can’t. Its hard sometimes. In those moments God is faithful to draw near to us. He weeps with us and is near to the broken hearted.
3. Humility:
Hardest of all, but it must begin with humility.
Pride is both thinking too highly of our selves and too lowly of God. Humility therefore is a proper understanding of one’s place in relation to God
Why do we worship? It is more who we worship than why.
The story of Mary (John 12):
A beautiful picture of this submission and humility.
Mary did what she did because she recognized Jesus as King & Saviour.
Will you choose the one thing necessary & not withhold your life of worship? Will you offer your whole life?
