Big Idea: The church best stands in unity when it humbly submits to Jesus.
I. Finding Unity Through Service (vv. 1-2)
A. Earlier, Paul emphasized the importance of living out our faith
in a manner worthy of the Gospel by standing in unity for the
Good News (cf. Phil. 1:27-30). Here, Paul shows us how we do
that by connecting the humble attitude of Messiah to the
behavior of the church. That is, the emphasis on humility and
service we see in Jesus should be seen in God’s people too.
B. Paul stresses unity in the church through:
1. Having a like-mindedness (cf. Gal. 5:13) – An attitude of
servanthood and cooperation.
2. Having the same love (cf. 1 Jn. 3:18) – The love of Christ
lived out among each other.
3. Sharing the same feelings (cf. Col. 3:12-13) – Being united
in spirit and living in harmony.
4. Focusing on one goal – Moving forward with the single
purpose of exalting Christ and building up His church.
C. When we see how our individual gifts and talents contribute to
the whole, then we realize how God has placed each one of us
in a position to contribute to His work in the church (cf. Rom.
12:3-5).
II. Finding Unity Through Humility (vv. 3-5)
A. Paul’s point here is not uniformity, but a true unity that comes
from a willingness to set aside personal agendas and ambitions
for the interests of God’s Kingdom and church community.
Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of
yourself less.
B. We grow in humility by:
1. Doing nothing out of selfish ambition (how does this further
my agenda?).
2. Doing nothing out of vain conceit (how does this make me
look?).
3. Considering others as more important than yourself (cf. Mk.
10:45).
4. Looking out for the interests of others.
C. Pride stands in the way of unity; humility fosters unity. And
Jesus sets the tone through His example (v. 5; cf. Jn. 13:12-17).
